September 9, 1889 "News was received of the death of of Mr. Geo. C. Blotchford, at Exeter, Ontario, of rheumatism and pulmonary troubles. He was a son-in-law of Mr. R. J. Patterson. The Advocate extends its sympathy to the bereaved family. Peace to his memory."

August 1898 "A considerable scope of territory north and northeast of town, was visited by a severe hail storm Monday afternoon. Dick Harris reports hail stones an inchin diameter but little damage to crops or garden.
At R. J. Patterson's, four miles northeast of town, the storm entirely destroyed his apple crop and did considerable damage to other crops. Mr. Patterson expected to have at least one hundred bushels of apples. But this storm cleared the trees. That is too bad. The loss of other portions of his crops would have been felt much less in comparison."

August 1898

March 1890 " A son of R. J. Patterson, down the river, killed with a rifle, two large swans that measured over flvo feet from tip to tip. Not a black feather could be found when they were picked - white as the driven snow."

September 1898 " Mrs. R. J. Patterson has on exhibition at the fair some silk thread woven by her in Virginia in '61 or '62. She raised the silk worms, feeding them on mulberry leaves, and also strung, wove and colored the thread. It is in a fine state of preservation, although made nearly forty years ago."

A 1908 history article in Sterling included " From Virginia came R. J. Patterson, who stopped a while in Iowa to acquire brothers-in-law Jim Monroe and J. H. Kinzie. Tney and their stalwart sons have done their full share in making Logan one of the banner counties of the state. "

January 31, 1918 "R. J. Patterson, for forty-three years a citlsen of Sterling and idenified with its commercial and social activitiese in many phases, died at his home Monday evening at 6:15 o'clock. He was 78 years old.
Mr. Pattnrson was a Virginian, born in Franklin county in 1845. He came to Colorado in 1873 and to Logan County in 1876. Here he engaged in the livestock and ranch business. Ten years ago he helped in the organization of the Farmers National Bank in Sterling. Later he became the second president of the institution and continued in that capacity for some time. He gave up that post later and became its vice president. In this capacity he served until the time of his death.
Mr. Patterson leaves five sons, his widow and two sisters, The sons are R., D. C., snd W. E. Patterson of Sterling, C. A. Patterson of Fleming, and J. F. Patterson of California. His two sisters who survive him are Mrs. ... el Kinzie of Haxtun and Mrs. Mar..a Flora of Haxtun.
His friends are without number in Logan county and othor parts of the state.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Church of the Brethren. Mr. Patterson's death came after a protracted illness of general debility of age and a recent severe attack of pneumonia."

October 14, 1898 "The Presbyterian parsonage, in this city was the scene of a quiet wedding at 7:30 Saturday evening. Rev. J. W. Stone spoke the words which united in marriage Miss Mattie Shannon and Mr. Fred Patterson. The bride and groom are very popular and are two of our very best young people. They start in life with every prospect for future happiness. The groom has recently built a neat residence and there they will shortly take up their residence."

August 1908 " Mr. and Mrs. F. Knudson, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Monroe, and Mr. Chalmers Shannon boarded the train this morning for an outing in the mountains. They go first to Paonia to visit Mr. and Mrs. Fred Patterson, and then return by way of Estes Park and other places."

September 1908 " Archie Monroe had positively all the fruit he could eat during his recent visit at Paonia. He got into Fred Patterson's orchard and the crop is large, hence he had a plenty. Fred will sell 1,500 boxes of apples this year, besides lots of grapes, plums and peaches. He and Mrs. Patterson think there is no place like a fruit farm on the western slope."

1955 Los Angeles "The 32-year-old service station attendant decided to "go for broke" and wound up in jail as well as broke.
Patterson said his tale of woe began last Friday he was counting receipts in the filling station he managed at 11151 Ventura, Studio City. A woman slipped and fell on the sidewalk, he said, and he went outside to help her to her feet. When he returned, he added, he found his receipts were $1050 short. Feeling that no one would believe this, he told police he decided to go to Las Vegas, recoup the loss in the gambling city, and be spared the embarrassing explanations. Before he went, police said, he placed, a $1000 down payment on an expensive sports-type car.
Then, with $2500 of his firm's money, he flew to Las Vegas. There, he said the dice games cleaned him out in four ??. and he returned sadly to Los Angeles. After thinking it over for a time, he called his employer, who promptly called the police. Det. Sgts. William Bess and Anderberg, on testimony that John Grant said they had obtained a cnmrnal complaint charging Patterson with grand theft. Patterson was arraigned before Municipal Judge Gerald C. Kepple, Van Nuys, who set a preliminary hearing for July 6. "

November 27, 1968, Aurora "Funeral services were held Friday for Edwin R. (Chick) Haynes, 1231 Quentin St. He had owned Haynes Jewelry Company, 9832 East Colfax Ave„ since coming to Aurora in 1946. The services were held at the Aurora-Chase Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Harley W. Farnham of United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was at Ft. Logan National Cemetery. He died Wednesday at the Presbyterian Medical Center after a short illness. He was a charter member of the Aurora Lions and Rotary Clubs and was a member of Leyden Childs Wickersham Post #l of the American Legion. He was a member of the board of directors of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce.
Haynes was born in Sterling, Colo, on April 21, 1911. He was educated in the Sterling schools and at Colorado State College in Greeley. He married Elva I. Kershner in Brush, Colo, on June 9, 1941. During World War II he served in the European Theater.
Haynes is survived by his wife, a son, Dennis C. Haynes of Denver; a daughter, Mrs. Pamela D. Rogge, Aurora; a brother, Lester E. Haynes of Aurora; and a sister, Mrs. V. C. Koening."

He attended the University of Denver for two years. He married Esther F. Patterson on Jan. 15, 1933, in Sterling. She survives. Mr. Coats was a member of First Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. His hobbies included target shooting and hunting, and he was an amateur artist, working in oil and watercolor.

" Esther F. Coats of Montrose died Saturday at her daughter's home in Olathe. She was 83. Mrs. Coats worked in the Logan County Clerk and Recorders Office for seven years after graduating from high school. She also was a homemaker. She had lived in Montrose since 1946. She was born March 22, 1907, to Dr. Dewitt Clinton and Mary Elizabeth Lent Patterson in Sterling, where she spent her childhood. She graduated from Logan County Industrial Art High School.
She married Horace D. Coats on Jan. 15, 1933, in Sterling. He died in December 1990 in Montrose. Mrs. Coats enjoyed flower gardening, needlepoint, and arts and crafts.
Survivors include three sons, John of El Paso, Texas, James of La Habra, and David of Tres Piedres, N.M.; a daughter, Cynthia Nelson of Olathe; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Victor Renzelman of Denver; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Three sisters, Edna Haynes, Mildred Pomeroy and Florence Powell; and two brothers, Jess and Lloyd Patterson, are deceased."

Her father's obituary in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on December 13, 1994 said "Word has been received here of the death of Thomas J. Stump 79, who died Oct. 19, 1994 at Windsor Gardens, Anaheim, Calif. He was a native of Manheim. A resident of Orange, he was the husband of Betty Jane Burke Stump. He had been married to the late Mary Weidman Shimer Stump.
Stump had operated Thomas J. Stump and Materials Management Consultants, in Orange. Earlier in his career, he worked for Armstrong World Industries, Hamilton Watch RCA, and New Holland Machine Co. Stump had also worked for Motorola Inc.s Mesa Semiconductor Department in Phoenix, Ariz. He founded the Phoenix Chapter of the American Production and Inventory Control Society. He also worked for Standard Pressed Steel, ITT Cannon Electric, Airesearch, AMERON, Poison Rubber and Resdel Engineering before retiring in 1979 and founding his consulting company. Stump was a member of St. Mary-Magdalene Episcopal Church, Orange. He enjoyed reading and listening to classical music, and he had a collection of more than 2,400 recordings and thousands of books. He was co-host of a Phoenix radio classical music program. Stump also enjoyed hiking. He was a graduate of Manheim High School and attended Franklin and Marshall College. He was the son of the late Thomas J. Sr. and Mary Vogel Stump.
Stump is survived by his wife; two daughters, Joan, wife of David Coats, Tres Piedras, N.M., and Suzy, wife of Robert Burnside, Camp Verde, and one grandson."

Joan's sister M.A. Suzy Burnside, 74, died Jan. 23, 2019, in Cottonwood, Arizona. No formal memorial service will be held.
Suzy Burnside was born April 2, 1944, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, to Thomas Stump and Mary Weidman. Suzy was an incredible woman, a self-proclaimed female chauvinist, a multi-faceted wealth of knowledge, and a caring community advocate..
She graduated from Arizona State University in 1965. She spent eight years living abroad in Europe after the death of her first husband, Wolfgang Schmidt-Taube. Upon her return to the U.S., she worked as a construction foreman for over 15 years in Arizona.
She moved to Camp Verde with her husband, Bob Burnside, and their son, Thomas Anderson, in 1993. They immediately fell in love with the community and Suzy spent her time involved with many organizations, boards and committees during her tenure in Camp Verde. She spent eight years as chairman of the Sanitation District and worked with P&Z on multiple occasions. She stood up for what she believed in and would not hesitate to fight against what she did not. A personable human being, she could even talk to the wrong number (and had) for over an hour.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Anderson, and her loyal German Shepard, Blitz.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Bob Burnside; son, John Jeremy “J.J.” Brown; sister, Joan Coats; mother, Mary Ann Wiedman; and father, Thomas Stump.
An absolutely unique woman; anyone who knew Suzy would say she was a kind-hearted, sweet woman, who was always willing to extend herself to anyone who needed it. She will be sorely missed by all."

"Blanca resident David P. Coats, 73, passed away November 18, 2018 at his home peacefully with his loving wife by his side. David was welcomed into the world on May 5, 1945 in Sterling, Colorado, the son of Horace Coats and Esther Frances Patterson Coats. He worked as a silver smith for many years and was always known for his ability to fix any and everything. He was always a handy guy to have around. He was a kind and loving husband, stepfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend who enjoyed making things, working on cars, making belt buckles, splitting wood, and spending time with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife Sherry McCarty of Blanca, CO; step-children Charity McCarty of Texas, Matthew McCarty, Nathan (Tiffany) McCarty both of Greeley, CO; brother James Coats of Longmont, CO; sisters-in-laws Coy Kingsley of Lubbock, TX; Coleen Ingram of Austin, TX. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents Horace and Esther Coats, brother John Coats and one sister Cynthia Coats."



JAMES

August 1890 Sterling "School opened at 9 o clock Monday morning. Thirty teachers were present.....
Monday afternoon Mr. James Patterson acted as teacher in arithmetic, square and cubic root and mensuration, being tho topics discussed."


James R. Patterson claimed 40 acres in section 14, 8N 52W in 1897.

In 1900 Logan County, on the same census page as Robert, James is a farmber, born October 1866 in Virginia, married 7 years to Irene N., October 1877 Illinois. Rubie V. Februaray 1898 and William M. April 1900 were both born in Colorado.

EMMA

May 1886 "G. C. Blatchford has been re-engaged to teach in District No 30. This makes this popular teacher's third term in this District. If the board have their way about it, he will stay much longer. "

George C. Blatchford claimed a tract in section 4, 8N 52W, the same township as the Pattersons, in 1890.


Emma D. Patterson and G. C. Blatchford married on 27 Dec 1887 in Sterling, Colorado.


September 9, 1889 "News was received of the death of of Mr. Geo. C. Blotchford, at Exeter, Ontario, of rheumatism and pulmonary troubles. He was a son-in-law of Mr. R. J. Patterson. The Advocate extends its sympathy to the bereaved family. Peace to his memory."

"Mrs. Emma Blatchford, daughter of R. J. Patterson, ex-state water commissioner, died here yesterday at the home of her parents after an illness of long duration."

Oct. 23, 1902 Sterling "A beautiful and most impressive league wedding was held here tonight in the Methodist Episcopal church. The contracting parties were Miss Hannah Blatchford and Mr. Alfred E. Warren, both of this city. The bride having been president nf the local Epworth league for several terms and the groom an active member since its organization, a league wedding was decided upon.
The church decorations were in red and white, the league colors. The ring was borne by little Vivian Withrow, the ribbon bearers were Merit Warren and Edna Smith. The bridesmaids were Grace Warren, Florence Smith and Edith Beckford, ail members of the league and dressed in white, bearing red carnations. Ralph Pereau, Archie Warren and Percy Conklin, members of the league and the league cabinet, completed the wedding party. The ceremony was performed in the presence of the members of the church and league by the pastor, R. N. Smith. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the home of Mayor and Mrs. Wells Cole, which was largely attended by relatives and leaguers. The color scheme was also carried out in the refreshments, the cake and ice cream being red and white and other refreshments similarly arranged as to color.
Miss Blatchford came to Sterling some six years sgo from near Toronto, Canada, and has won many friends by her true Christian character and her devotion to church and league work.
Mr. Warren is well known throughout the county."

CHARLES

September 1, 1907 "On Thursday at 2:30 o'clock, at the home of the bride's parents in Sterling, Charles A. Patterson and Miss Grace E. Gleason were united in marriage, Rev. G. L. Boroughs officiating. The happy couple were the recipients of a number of nice presents and have the best wishes of a host of friends and acquaintances. They were both born and raised in Logan county and have every promise for future happiness and prosperity."

October 1916 "Wm. Patterson of Bayard, Ia., and H. D. Patterson of Danville, Ia., brothers of County Sheriff S. B. Patterson, who have been visiting in Sterling for the past two weeks, returned to their respective homes."
