Patterson said his tale of woe began last Friday he was counting receipts in the
filling station he managed at 11151 Ventura, Studio City. A woman slipped and fell
on the sidewalk, he said, and he went outside to help her to her feet. When he
returned, he added, he found his receipts were $1050 short. Feeling
that no one would believe this, he told police he decided to go to Las Vegas,
recoup the loss in the gambling city, and be spared the embarrassing explanations.
Before he went, police said, he placed, a $1000 down payment on an expensive
sports-type car.
Then, with $2500 of his firm's money, he flew to Las Vegas.
There, he said the dice games cleaned him out in four ??.
and he returned sadly to Los Angeles. After thinking it over for a time,
he called his employer, who promptly called the police. Det. Sgts.
