January 1904 "One birthday - One keg of beer in a temperance town.
One keg of beer - one celebration.
One celebration - four drinks around.
Four drinks around - four fines in police court.
Four fines - four cases of appeal by one man.
And thereby hangs a tale. The story occasioned heated argument in
the court of appeals yesterday morning as to whether a man has a right
to treat his friends to liquid refreshments in a temperance town.
"This is on me, boys,"
M. Litch of Sterling is alleged to have announced to about thirty
friends on his birthday. Further, the complaint states that the
friends responded, and that the town marshal was invited in.
There were four drinks around, it is held, and as the ordinance of
Sterling states that ho one shall sell or give away intoxicating
liquor, Attorney McConley, representing the town, declares that he
has four cases against
Litch, one for every drink. Allen and Webster argued for Litch,
and declared that their client had a right to "set 'em up" if he chose.
Further, it was alleged that Litch did not own the wet goods,
but that the beer belonged to another. The case was submitted, and a
decision will be handed down in February."

afternoon at the home of the bride's brother, W. B. Jefferies, at Hillrose,
Rev. J. L. Cameron of Brush officiating. The ceremony took place in the
presence of immediate friends of the family, and Miss Flora Dalgleish.
It was planned that the marriage should be maintained a deep,
impenetrable secret, and all day Tuesday the young people worked together
in the local postoffice, with no intimation of their little affair.
However, late Tuesday evening, members of the Sterling fire department,
of which the bridegroom is a member, learned of the marriage and an
unsuccessful hunt for the couple was commenced, with the purpose in view
of giving them a rousing impromptu celebration.
The bride is a graduate of the Logan county high school and the
Greeley Teachers' college. For the past 15 months she has been general
delivery clerk at the postoffice here. The bridegroom is a graduate of the
Logan county high school also, and for the past two years has been mail

county and has been called to report for service September 19,

is necessary that the honeymoon should be interrupted by
the bridegroom's call to war."

Because of his long association with the Sterling Fire department, he was assigned to a fire truck and hose company at Camp Funston and Fort Riley and continued in that line of duty for the larger part of the war' duration. He was in the artillery for a short time, holding the non-commis-sioned office of corporal. Returning to Sterling, Mr. Litch and his brother re-entered the automobile business, obtaining the agencies for Hudson and Essex cars. They continue in that business, and have at- ' tained large success. He has driven ! over all parts of the county many i times in the automobile and livery! having been stationed at Fort Ord in the army. He holds an AB degree from
Colorado State college where he was graduated in 1952. Mr. Cresto
is married and the father of one child. He is a member of the Catholic
church and Phi Epsilon Phi. His former home was in Canon City, Colorado."
"Norma Lorraine Cresto (dying November 14, 2013) was born on July 28, 1930 in Sterling, Colorado.
She had an idyllic childhood in a charming mid-western town on the Colorado
Great Plains; the only child of Norman and Flora Litch. Her entire extended
family lived in and around Sterling and she often told her children of all
of her fun days skating around Sterling with her cousin,
Bud and her dog, Mickey.
She met her husband of 60 years, Joseph Cresto,
at Colorado State College in Greeley. They married soon after graduation
and Lorraine followed Joe to California, where he was stationed at Fort Ord.
She often reminisced about their days in Pacific Grove - walking along the
beach paths, looking out over the Monterey Bay. Lorraine and Joe moved to
Salinas in 1956, where Joe taught school and Lorraine began teaching
part-time in between raising three little ones.
They moved their three young children, Susan, John and Antoinette
(Toni) to Redding in 1963.
In 1964, Lorraine began her 30-year career at
Shasta College, teaching business classes, including a very successful
block program called "Secretarial Skills'. In the two-semester program,
Lorraine taught a comprehensive list of business skills including writing and grammar, accounting, business machines, typing, business math and many other disciplines necessary to give young adults all the skills needed to become employed in an office setting. She worked with local businesses in career development and assisted nearly all of her students in landing good jobs. Many of her students made a point of telling her children that she was their favorite teacher. Lorraine was an accomplished pianist delighting all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and keeping Joe entertained most evenings. Her apple, cherry, peach and pumpkin pies are legendary, and her sugar cookies were perfect. Lorraine and Joe made numerous journeys to Europe and enjoyed art, music, history and the beautiful sights. When they weren't traveling abroad, they toured the United States in their RVs - many trips with the friends she enjoyed so very much.
Most of all, Lorraine enjoyed her many friends and her family.
She was the perfect mother - high standards and unconditional love.
Lorraine leaves behind her husband and best friend, Joe. She also leaves
behind her children: Susan Baker (Steve), John Cresto (Bridget),
and Antoinette (Toni) Johnson (Jon); grandchildren:
Elisabeth White (Doug), Alexander Ball, Joseph Cresto III,
Ellen Cresto, Mark Johnson (Sophia) and Roseanne Johnson;
step-grandchildren: Matthew, Meghan and Sarah Baker;
great grandchildren: Emma, Elise and Andrew White.
Lorraine has always lived up to the song that her family always
believed was written just for her: "Sweet Lorraine".
Lorraine had a sweet twinkle in her eye, a keen sense of humor
and a lovely spontaneous laugh.
Services will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Northern California Veteran's Cemetery. The family is hosting a reception at Riverview Country Club at 3:30 p.m. "
