JOHN

October 17, 1907 "Born: To Mr. and Mrs. J. H. King, on Wednesday, October 9th, a daughter. For some reason, known only to himself, our esteemed treasurer kept this important secret all to himself until it was three days old - the baby, we mean, of course. This birth is a particularly happy one, as it breaks the monotony of Mr. King's family. Before it, he had three fine boys, and a girl was needed to give variety."

June 1918 "Mr. and Mrs. J. H. King were very pleasantly surprised Sunday evening at their home, 420 South Third avenue, the occasion being in honor of the twentieth anniversary of their marriage. The affair was planned by Mrs. King's sisters, Mrs. B. J. Ragatz and Mrs. Wm. Patterson, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. A. H. King. They requested Mr. and Mrs. King to go for a drive Sunday afternoon, but to return at 4:30. They returned promptly at that time and found the house appropriately decorated, the decroations including a large bell, old shoes, etc., and they were asked to go upstairs until they were ready for them. Mr. and Mrs. King were now fully aware of the meaning of the decorations, and time of return from drive, and arranged a little surprise of their own. They descended the stairs to the strains of the wedding march, played by Mrs. Ragatz, decked in grotesque wedding garments, lace, veil, fancy vest, etc. They were the recipients of several wedding gifts, consisting of a China tea set, a hand painted China dish, and a gift of twenty carnations, ten red and ten white, from their children. Those who helped them to celebrate this anniversary of their marriage are Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Ragatz, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. King and their families.
