August 1900 " Miss Berrie Hatch arrived from Des Moines,
Ia., on the early train this morning for a visit with her
uncle, H. C. Hatch, and other relatives."
August 1, 1907 "Henry, the eldest son of Henry S and
Caroline C. Hatch, was born in the town of Philadelphia,
Jefferson county, New York, on the 12th day of June, 1840.
After four years, the family moved to Russell, St. Lawrence
county, New York, to make their permanent home.
Christian inlluences early had their effect upon young Henry,
and at the age of fourteen he was converted and joined the
Baptist church of his home town, Russell, N. Y.
On thr 27th day of August 1861, he enlisted in Battery
D of the 1st N. Y. Light Artillery, where he served until
January 4th 1864, when he was honorably discharged on
account of ill health.
After spending some months with his parents,
he regained his health in some measure and went west to
DeKalb, I11., the same fall, where he resided for about
four years, during which time he was married to
Elizabeth A. W. Cook, March 10th 1868. In the fall of the
same year the young couple went to Iowa and lived there
about five years.
From there they moved to Gibbon, Neb. After residing
there several years they came to northeastern Colorado
and for a quarter of a century have been well known
and honored residents. Mr. Hatch has been a farmer all
his life.
His health finally failed, until he sold his
farm near Sterling and in April 1895 moved to town.
Ever since Mr. Hatch's conversion in boyhood,
he has lived the Christian life, ever holding fast
to his faith during the trying years of army life.
Wherever he has lived, he has been a member of the
Baptist church, and if there were no Baptist church
near, he joined with others of like faith in
organizing one as soon as possible. He has
helped organize seven Baptist churches,
of which six are still doing service for the
Lord. He has always done all in his power by his
presence, his prayers, his influence and his
means to advance the interests of his church
and the kingdom of his Lord.
For the last two
years Mr. Hatch was almost a constant sufferer
from a complication of diseases. In March of
this year he was confined to his room, where he
died Friday night, July 26, 1907.
He leaves to mourn him his wife,
three sons and two daughters, three brothers,
S. W. Hatch of Chicago, J W. Hatch of
Minneapolis, and Rev. W. J. Hatch of Denver,
and one sister, Mrs. E. H. Wetz of Malta, I11.,
survive him. His brother from Denver was
present when he died.
Mr. Hatch leaves a host of friends who
join heartily in their sympathy with the
bereaved family.
The funeral at the Baptist church was
attended by many more people than could
possibly gain entrance to the building.
The services were held Sunday at 11 o'clock
and the remains were laid to rest in
Riverview cemetery."
August 1, 1907
The plot in Block 43, Lot 4 was purchased by Edward Hatch.
Elizabeth W. Hatch is buried in the same plot May 25, 1844 - April 14, 1913.
April 17, 1913
July 1908 "Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Smith and Mrs. H. C. Hatch
start this evening for Malta, I11., to visit a few weeks."
EDWARD
March 1916 "The firm of Hatch Bros. & Smith, regarded from the standpoint of its
individual members, has been a pioneer factor in the development of local trade through
the medium of buying, selling and exchange of produce in its broadest sense.
Messrs. Hatch brothers and Smith bought their present business of Matt Brown May 14, 1913.
Since that time they have greatly increased its trade range and Increased its scope to
embrace a wide variety of commodities, Flour, hay, grain, bran, bides, furs,
poultry and eggs, prepared stock and poultry foods, salt-both barrel and rock-everything,
in fact, passing first hand from producer to.consumer are handled.
E. W. Hatch and Gordon G. Hatch are old residents of the county, their father having
been one of the earliest settlers here. A wide and favorable acquaintance throughout the
region as well as an intimate first hand knowledge of trade and trade conditions;
have been largely accountable for their success in building a live and thriving business.
Mr. Smith is also a pioneer of this vicinity, he having bought and shipped the first
car of wheat ever sold in Sterling. This was when he was employed by the Goddard Bros.
Lumber Company, during the time when elevators were a dream and the unloading had to be
done into the cars. Mr. Smith was connected with various local elevators and lumber
firms for thirteen years prior to coming into the above firm.
The firm headquarters, located at 115-117 North Second Street, consists,
beside the regular office room, of a wholesale flour room, bran and salt room,
feed and grain bins and a grinding room. In the last named department their feeds are
ground by electrically driven machinery, mixed after their own formulas and guaranteed of
the most superior quality.
Flour of the popular 'Columbian' brand, made at St. Edwards, Nebraska, is one of
their specialties, being bought in car lots at close prices. They also buy and
sell a vast quantity of poultry and eggs, supplying the local hotels and
markets and shipping large orders to the Denver market.
The famous International Stock and Poultry Food is handled, as well as all kinds of
poultry supplies, Blatchford's Calf Meal and Wizard Fertilizer for house plants and
lawns, the latter being a highly superior article, odorless and cheap.
Hatch Bros. & Smith are headquarters for farm and garden seeds, beans, nuts,
meal, etc. They maintain their own delivery wagons, which are always busy making
deliveries to a large and growing list of patrons in all parts and growing list of
patrons in all parts of the city. Telephone Sterling 341."

"Lavenia Edith Morgan was born to John and Anna Marquardt Morgan on July 14, 1919, two months before she was expected. Her grandmother, Lavenia Hatch Marquardt, made an incubator in the kitchen oven.
Lavenia Morgan arrived in Bayfield on Sunday, January 1, 1939; she was 19 and had just completed a bachelor's degree at Colorado Normal School in Greeley. Her chosen field of study had been civil engineering; the traditionalist dean said education.
She started teaching January 2 at Bayfield High School, where some of the senior students were older than she. That daunted her not at all.
On Tuesday, she started volunteering at Bayfield's library, then a shelf of shared books in Beech's store. Eventually she helped move the collection to the building that had been Farmers and Miners Bank, on the northeast corner of Mill and Pearl Streets, where she and Mrs. MacMillan started cataloging books by Dewey Decimal System.
Lavenia and Dee McCoy, who lived in the house across the fence to the north of the home where Lavenia boarded and was sponsored as a single teacher, told the same story about how they met until they got to the part about who threw the first snowball.
Most of all they loved their family: Ann McCoy Harold; Stewart McCoy; and Donnalee and Harry Baxstrom, their children Lavenia and Vince Taylor and son TJ, and Ashley and Dawn Baxstrom and son Jagger Boone.
She worked in the school office, taught and was school librarian in Bayfield until the mid 60's when she went to Ignacio schools. She retired there in 1972. She often said, ""It's a real pleasure that people who were once my students have become my friends.""
She is remembered by many of those friends as having been fair, not attempting to be sure everyone got the same thing but striving to be sure each got what he or she needed at the moment. Sometimes the dose was not pleasant, just necessary.
Being a good citizen is a value Lavenia held dear. She served on election boards, helped the effort to build Bayfield's first gym, sponsored school functions, and put Bayfield's library second only to her family. For those who wish to honor her with a memorial, please contribute to Lavenia McCoy Library, PO Box 227, Bayfield CO 81122.
She was honorary grandmother to Pine River 4-H Club for years. Her latest volunteer work was at Pine River Valley Heritage Center Museum. Lunches with other elders at Pine River Senior Center were special occasions.
Lavenia lived in that house where she began her married life in August, 1940, until her death, August 31, 2015."
