"Joseph Hadfield, a pioneer of Prairieville, now Waukesha, located at that village in July, 1843. Chinly, Derbyshire, England, is his native place, his birth having occurred October 16, 1816. His parents, John and Ellen (Rangely) Hadfield, were natives of the same shire. His mother, who was a daughter of Aaron Rangely, died in her native land, and his father in Waukesha. Before leaving England, Joseph Hadfield was married in 1843 to Miss Harriet Jackson, also of Derbyshire, and the following year emigrated to the United States. His wife was permitted to enjoy her home in Prairieville but one year, as her death occurred in September, 1844, leaving one son, Joseph J., now deceased, who was one of the prominent business men of Waukesha County. In 1845 Mr. Hadfield was again married, the lady of his choice being Miss Sarah Harrison, who was born in the same house as was his first wife. Of this union there were ten children: John G., born October 9, 1845, died September 19, 1873; George A., born April 19, 1847, resides in Chiago; Abraham H., born January 23, 1849, lives in Gothenburg, Neb.; Sarah J., born January 21, 1851, is the wife of Elon Aitken, of Waukesha; Isaac R., born June 29, 1853, makes his home in Waukesha; Albert W., born April 6, 1855, lives in Chicago; Oscar W., born November 12, 1857, is a farmer of the town of Genesee; Edwin H., born September 20, 1860, resides in Minneapolis; Charles H., born June 19, 1863, is the next, and Laura B., born February 11, 1867, is the wife of Dr. Albert J. Hodgson, of Palmyra, Wis.
Upon coming to Waukesha, Mr. Hadfield established himself in the shoe business, which he carried on until 1868. His next venture was in the stone quarrying business, with which he has been prominently identified for years. The company of which he is a member owns extensive quarries in the Town of Menomonee, Waukesha County, and a railroad connecting them with the St. Paul, Northwestern and Wisconsin Central Railroads, thus giving them a good outlet for their product. Besides he has other interests in the country, such as farms and village property.
For years Mr. and Mrs. Hadfield have been active workers in the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics he is a Republican. For over half a century Mr. Hadfield has been a resident of Waukesha, and is one of the best known pioneers of the county."
