May 1908 Sterling "Misses Alta and Isola Herman and Frances Price spent Saturday and Sunday
at the Thos. Giacomini ranch visiting Mr. and Mrs. Owen Hillman."
April 14, 1909 "Thomas Giacomini arrived in Sterling last Wednesday from
seven months spent mid scenes of his youth at Villa di Chiavenna, Lombardia,
Itaiy. And he came not alone, having on the eve of his departure for his
home in this country been united in marriage to Miss Jennie Tam of that
place, the marriage occurring March 23. Mr. Giacomini's bride, whom he
had known in his boyhood days, is a niece of Mrs. A. Giacomini
of Sterling, and a cousin of Mrs. W. B. Giacomini;
she also has other cousins here. Mr. Thomas Giacomini
had not been to his mother's home since coming to this
country fourteen years ago and he found many changes there.
His father died several years ago, and as the estate had never
been settled, the trip from which he has just returned was partly
to adjust matters in that connection. The winter there,
Mr. Giacomini says, was delightfuliy mild and added to the
enjoyableness of his visit. The Giacomini estate lays on the
border of Switzenand, some of the property being in that
country. The farms there are small, generally,
and intensive cultivation is practiced. The growing season
is about like ours here and about everything is grown there
that is grown in this country. Wages are much higher
there now than formerly, and the cost of living has
increased in proportion. Land is measured by the meter
(about a yard) and is worth $l5O an acre counted in
United States money. Mr. and Mrs. Giacomini left
Lombardia on March 24, sailing on the 27th,
and reaching New York on April 3. They traveled fifteen
days altogether in reaching Sterling. Going over Mr.
Giacomini said only thirteen days were required to make
the trip. Mr. and Mrs. Giacomini wil either build and
make their home in Sterling or reside on the ranch."
