"Our people were distressed to hear of the death of Thos. Elmer, who fell asleep last Sunday (May 2, 1909) at
his home in Cortez. Mr. Elmer had been failing for sometime, his life gradually yielding to the strokes
of diabetes, which attacked him last fall. He was well liked by us all, being of a most friendly
disposition, and he will be missed each day from his accustomed place.
Thomas Elmer was born in 1862 in Van Buren county, Iowa, coming to Colorado at the age
of nineteen and settling in Sterling. From there he went to Farmington, N. M.,
where in 1890 he married Miss Bertha Starriett, who with four children survives him.
Eight years ago they came to the Dolores river, and four years ago moved to this valley.
He was buried from the Congregational church here last Monday, the service being conducted
by Elders Isaacs and Randall. The house was filled with his friends who came to pay
their last respects to the one they had so highly regarded in life.
The Journal extends its heartfelt sympathy to the widow, who with the fatherless ones are
compelled to take on the battles of life."
