"The funeral of Mrs. Mary F. Ayres occurred Wednesday afternoon from her late residence at Twenty-third street and Avenue D. A large crowd of friends of the deceased was present, and a part of the ladies only could be accommodated with admission, for want of room. The services were conducted by the Christian Scientists of the city, Mrs. S. S. St. John, and Col. John Roe leading. Flowers were lavishly used as tributes to the departed, and some beautiful floral gifts were received.
The pall bearers were all old friends and neighbors, residents of the city from twenty to twenty-five years. They were Captain Joseph Black, Mayor Halbert, Thomas Beckett, A. C. Bessie, J. P. Johnson, and W. D. Clapp.
Mrs. Mary J. Ayres has lived in Kearney twenty-one years. She was born at Johnstown, New York, November 6, 1823 and died in Kearney, January 1, 1898, aged seventy-four years, one month and twenty-five days. She moved with her parents to near Akron, Ohio, where they lived for a short time, and from there went to Medina county, Ohio, which at that time was a wild timbered county. There she married Nathan W. Ayres and raised four children, the oldest, a daughter, dying in Iowa at the age of eighteen. In 1867 she moved to Birmingham, Iowa. In 1876 she came to Kearney, bringing with her the two youngest children, and lived with her son, C. D. Ayres, until the spring of 1892. In 1892 Mrs. Ayres moved to her residence at Twenty third and D, and has since lived with her son, W. K. Ayres.
She was always a lover of flowers and fruits, and it would be hard to find another home with more flowers and fruit in so small an area. Scores of friends made during her long residence in Kearney mourn her death, and extend to her three sons, Messre. C. D., E. J. and W. K. Ayres, all consolation that lies in human power."
