"Mr. Goodwin came to Sterling in 1881 with his brother, Mont Goodwin, from South Dakota,
the trip of 300 miles being made on horseback. The country all laid open then and the first wire
fence they saw was the colony fence enclosing the lands of J. M. and M. C. King, Allen Sanders,
Ed and Marion Smith, R. C. Perkins,
Mrs. M. E. Ayres, Hugh and Ed Davis and Uncle D. B. Davis, 2 1/4 miles below Sterling."
