George W. Rhoads

George cash-claimed a quarter in 6, 8N 48W in 1891.

There are other George Rhoads, like the one in Nemaha County Nebraska in 1880, Thayer County in 1885, and ended up in Missoula County, Montana.

THIS IS THE BEST PROSPECT.

In 1880 Clinton County, Indiana, George is 26, with parents Elisia R. 57 and Nancy 44.  Siblings are Susan F. 15, Margret a. 11, Charles C. 10, Oscar O. and Fredrick B. 3.

In Pierce City, Lawrence County, Missouri, G.W. Rhoads and Miss M.L. Brite married Sept 14, 1881. That's the Missouri state record.  Family records say George W. Rhoads and Mary L. Bright.

One tree said Mary Luella Bright was born Jan 19, 1862 in Keynsham, Somerset, England and died Feb 15, 1899 in Denver.

It also said that Estella Pearl Rhoades was born Mar 5, 1884, and died Nov 26, 1888, both in Neodesha, Wilson County, Kansas.

Wilson County burial records have "Rhodes Estella Pearl Neodesha 11/26/1888 NR 1888-Nov-30 21 months; daughter of George Rhodes."

The West Yuma County History says Agnes was born March 1, 1890 in Neodesho, Kansas, and came to Yuma at age 11.  William "Bert" McNichols met her on one of his frequent trips to Yuma, and on April 20, 1906 in Yuma W.B., 27 and Agnes Rhoades, 16 were married by E.M. Pottes, Justice of the Peace.

In 1900 Pierce, Lawrence County, Elijah R. born June 1829 in Maryland, and Elizabeth Dec 1833, Ohio have been married 16 years.  Elizabeth's had four kids, two living.  Elisha R. Rhoads had married Elizabeth Coonrod March 24, 1884 in Clinton County, Indiana, so Nancy must have died 1880-1884.

June 29, 1889 Frankfort, Indiana.  "Mrs. Rhodes, mother-in-law to Josiah Sager died last Wednesday; the funeral obsequies occurred at Mulberry, Thursday."

THIS IS FROM A FAMILY BLOG - NO GUARANTEES AS TO ACCURACY

George lost his wife, Mary when their children were young.

Agnes was 8 years old when her Mother, Mary died. One census showed Daisy as being 17 when they were in Denver.  Agnes remembers that her mother was not well. Mary is buried in Denver, Colorado, at the Fairmount Cemetery. George raped Daisy on Feb 5th and on Oct 16, 1900 he was sent to the pen for 5-10 years. We do not know how long.  I seem to think that was when the children went to the orphanages. When he went to the Pen.  Their mother had died and they had no one to take care of all of them.  In 1901 the Yuma paper said that George and his daughter, Mary, from Denver came to visit his daughter Agnes McNichols.

Bert McNichols said George neglected his children and they were placed in separate orphanages.

Earl also died while in Denver and is buried at the Fairmount Cemetery. George worked for the railroad while he was in Neodesha, Kansas. That is where he lost his leg. The train ran over his leg and severed it. Then he was sent to barber school to learn that trade.  They moved to Denver sometime between 1892 and 1895.  While in Denver he worked as a barber. After he was released from prison he came to Yuma, Otis, and worked as a barber.  When he lived in Eckley, Colorado he was retired.  While he was walking across the train tracks in Eckley, he got his stub leg in the tracks. A train came along and killed him.  His granddaughter, Irene, remembers him with a stub leg and it made noise as he walked across the floor, It was cut off above the knee. His granddaughter, Charllotte,  remembers when he came to visit he would bring Oysters for Agnes to make Oyster Soup. He gave all of his change to Delbert her brother but never gave her any.

He taught his daughter Agnes to cut her families hair. She always cut her sons hair.
