Larry Lee Pack passed away Sunday, March 27 at Allison Care Center in Lakewood at the age of 66. Larry was born September 24, 1938 in Sterling, the son of Lee and Wilma (Hovel) Pack, Haxtun. He was baptized, confirmed and an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He received his education at Haxtun Grade School.

Larry had a strong work ethic and was happiest when busy. In his early years he delivered a weekly newspaper, The Grit, and also sold Watkins products door-to-door. He assisted his mother at the Pack Convalescent Home and worked as a custodian at Raye's Restaurant and the American Legion Hall. He loved doing yard work in the summer and scooping snow in the winter.

Larry also loved to be of services in the community. Helping others was a way of life for him since childhood. In 1984 he was crowned "King for a Day" on his birthday and was given royal treatment by friends, family, and staff at the nursing home to say thank you for him many hours of volunteer work. He spent time each morning and afternoon visiting residents and running errands for them and the staff. He especially enjoyed taking his special friend, Kevin Bamford, for walks around town in his wheelchair.

In 1985 Larry was the winner of the Haxtun Corn Festival Theme Contest sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. His winning theme was "Lookin' Good." The highlight of his life was being named a Grand Marshall of the 1989 Corn Festival Parade for his contributions to the community. He was very proud to lead the parade in a red convertible and later wrote his sister about all of the hugs he was still getting from the townspeople.

Unfortunately, Larry was soon after that stricken with illness and declining health. After making Heritage Living Center his home for several years, he moved to Lakewood to be closer to family.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and sister Lois.

Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and George McCulloch, Buffalo Creek; nieces Kim Morse and family (Dan, Kyle and Kaitlyn), Parker, and Kari Gneiser and family (Robb, Merritt and Sawyer), Bailey; aunts, Glenda Hovel, Haxtun, Dorothy Sator, Haxtun, and Louise Talbot, San Diego, California. A host of caring cousins also survive him.

Larry's burial followed the service at the Haxtun cemetery. 
 

   Abner came to Haxtun with his parents when a mere boy and has grown to manhood in this vicinity where he was a well known and dearly beloved and respected. He always took sunshine with him ever brightening the paths of others, finding cheerfulness if anyone could. He went to his last rest with a pleasant smile which indicates that all is well.

   He leaves to mourn his sad departure his aged parents, four sisters, Cora Groves , Tilla Dilliner, Ruth Clark, Martha and three brothers, Harry H, Asa J and Benjamin L, all residing near Haxtun, besides a host of other relatives and friends. An infant brother, the second child preceded him to the happy home.

   Funeral was conducted at Haxtun M E Church. Interment was made in Haxtun Cemetery

     Homer Gilbert Lyman, the son of John and Mrs. Lyman of our village was born near Hamilton, Marion Co, Iowa, on June 2, 1883. When but a little child three years old his parents removed to Holt County, Nebraska, settling on a homestead 6 miles south of Atkinson. On this place little Homer grew up to young manhood. A bright boy of pleasing personality and address, he desired to be doing his part in the worlds work, and going to Iowa took up telegraphy, learning it readily. He worked at his business there for awhile and later went west to Denver where he found employment as telegrapher. Later taking a position with a mining firm which he held for several years.

     In 1903 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Saunders at Black Hawk, Colorado. Three children: were born to them, Homer G, Catherine, and Edward, little Homer dying when a small baby.

     A year ago last spring with his little family, Homer went to Texas coming from there last fall to make his parents in our village a visit returning to Texas later. Toward the end of April while living at Lubbock, Texas, he was stricken with scarlet fever which in itself might not have proved fatal had not pneumonia set in. He died on April 28,1912, aged 20 years 11 months.

     The day before he died his parents received a telegram appraising them of the danger, and they started at once for his bedside but reached Lubbock the day after he had gone. Interment was made in Fairmount Cemetery Denver, May 2, the funeral party coming from Lubbock by rail. The funeral services were also held in Denver under the auspices of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of which order he was a member. Members of the Elks, IOOF and Royal Highlanders were present as individuals to witness the burial of a brothers: of their order.

     Mr. Lyman leaves besides his wife and children: and his parents several other relatives add scores of friends to mourn his untimely going. His winning ways and general disposition made him friends wherever he went.

     The mysteries of life we may not know neither can we fathom the mysteries of providence. Why a life so young, so bright, so full of promise should be taken when but entering upon the years of fullest manhood must remain a mystery until we see with perfected vision.
