Arza and Mary Frances (McGruder) Lyman, sons Abner, Benjamin L. and Lettie Lorena (Bamford) Lyman



Arza B. Lyman proved up a quarter in 35, 9N 48W in 1906.

Ben was born in Marion County, Iowa, the son of Arza B. Lyman and Mary Frances (McGruder) Lyman

Ben proved up a quarter in 27, 8N 48W in 1915.

 

August 1919  Benjamin Lyman sold his farm machinery at public auction in order  to spend more time with his well drilling and repair business.
 

Ben L. 1888-1977 and Lettie 1894-1986 are buried in Haxtun.

Arza and Mary are buried in Haxtun, too.

Abner A. Lyman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arza Lyman, old settlers of Hamilton, was drowned near Haxtun, Colo., July 31, 1915. He was born at Hamilton, August 26. 1891 and at the time of his death had reached the age of 23 years, 11 months, 5 days. He leaves his parents and four sister and three brothers, all of the vicinity of Haxtun and Fleming, Colo. 

RUTH Funeral service for Mrs. Ruth Lyman Clark of Sheridan, Mo. were held Friday afternoon, June 23, 1961, at the Methodist Church in Sheridan conducted by Rev. Huey McFarland. Interment was in the Sheridan Cemetery.
Mrs. Clark passed away June 20th at a Clearmont, Mo., nursing home.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Vivian Garrard of Parnell, Mo., and Mrs. Verda Hilton of McMinnville, Ore. Her only son, Phillip Michael, passed away at birth. Also surviving are one grandson and four granddaughters; one brother, Ben Lyman of Dailey, Colorado; 2 sisters, Mrs. Tilla Dilliner of Clovis, New Mexico, and Mrs. Martha Quasbarth of Grandview, Washington..
Mrs. Clark was born September 6, 1884, at Hamilton, IA. At an early age she moved to Haxtun, Colo. in a covered wagon and remained there until 1923 when she returned to Missouri. Mrs. Clark's husband, Grant Clark, passed away July 17, 1956. She was a member of the Methodist Church. 
 
HARRY Harry Lyman, born Aug 3, 1882 in Marion County, Iowa,  met Bessie Skeels while harvesting in Kansas. He had a homestead northwest of Haxtun, Colorado. She came to Colorado in 1907 and married Harry. They lived there and 3 girls were born. They then moved to Haxtun. Bessie had a nervous breakdown after the 3rd girl was born. Harry helped the Lyman boys on the thrashing machine and also drilled water wells south of Haxtun and Frank Dilliner and Everett Skeels used to help. They moved from there to Dailey, Colorado and helped Asa Lyman run a garage and sharpened plow lays for the farmers. Asa went to World War I over seas and Harry took care of things. He built a 6 roomed house and 3 months after the family moved in, he got influenza and pneumonia and died Nov 11, 1918, leaving 4 children and a baby 3 months on the way, the oldest girl was 10 years old. Bessie had to sell the home. It was built on a loan and she had no way to make payments. There was enough left after bills to build a small one room house with an attic where Bessie raised 5 children with the help of $15 widows pension and $15 from the county and she and the children worked at whatever they could. They went to school at Dailey, Colorado. Bessie died of a heart attack at the age of 78. She loved her church (Assembly of God), was active up until the last day. Pieced lap robes for the homes, embroidered pillow cases for the church, made scrap books for children. (notes of Grace Clemons)

Former Resident of Haxtun Passed Away on July 17th
 
Ulysses Grant Clark, a former Haxtun resident, and the brother-in-law of Ben Lyman of Dailey, passed away July 17 at a hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. He and his family moved to Sheridan, Mo. from Haxtun in 1924.
Mr. Clark was the son of the late Alexander and Cerrildia Clark and was born September 8, 1886 at Sheridan, Mo. He was 69 years, six months and 17 days old at the time of his passing.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Lyman on November 7, 1909 at Haxtun and to this union two daughters and one son were born. The son, Phillip, passed away at birth.
Funeral services sere held at the Methodist Church at Sheridan of which he was a member. Rev. Cole of Ravenwood, Mo. was in charge. Soloist was Mrs. Luther Cook who sang "The Old Rugged Cross", "Beyond the Sunset" and "Good Morning Up There."
Pallbearers were some of his old neighbors, Rollie Blaine of Clearmont, Mo., John James of Parnell, Mo., Kenneth Barks of Sheridan, Mo., Jack Campbell of Hopkins, Mo., Don Wake of Pickering, Mo., and Albert Lemon of Sheridan, Mo. Burial was in the Sheridan Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, two daughters, Mrs. Vivian Garrard of Parnell, Mo., and Mrs. Verda Hilton of McMinnville, Ore. Also five grandchildren; two brothers, Sherman of Grant City, Mo., and John of Sheridan and two sisters, Mrs. Lavina Herndon of Parnell, Mo., and Mrs. Alice Lee of Shenandoah, Iowa.
