HAXTUN PIONEER CALLED TO REWARD

Another pioneer of the Haxtun community was taken last Thursday when I.G. Gleason, 85, died following an illness of several months.

Mr. Gleason was one of the earlier homesteaders in this section of the state and had been a resident of the community for almost 30 years. He came to Colorado in the year 1888 and had made his home in or near Haxtun since 1903.

Due to old age, he had been in poor health for the past few years of his life and made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Edith Pearl Brooks.

Funeral services were held from the Church of the Brethren in Haxtun last Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. Interment was in the Haxtun cemetery. The funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. I.C. Snavely, who read the following obituary:

Isaac Gillett Gleason, son of Henry and Mary Gleason, was born at Cooperstown, Pennsylvania, October 26, 1846 and died at Haxtun, Colorado February 4, 1932 at the age of 85 years, three months and eight days.

On June 15, 1888 he was united in marriage with Mary Smith.

To them were born two daughters: Elma Luciena, who died in 1902 and Edith Pearl, with whom he has spent his later years. His wife preceded him in death on March 29, 1916.

Mr. Gleason came to Colorado from Iowa in 1888 and had lived near Haxtun since 1903.

He united with the Baptist church when a young man and held to his Christian faith throughout his lifetime.

He leaves to mourn his passing his only daughter, Mrs. Edith Pearl Brooks; his grandson, DeVern; two brothers, J.D. Gleason of Fleming, Joel Gleason of Sioux Rapids, Iowa and one sister, Mrs. Myra Thurston of Berkley, California, besides other relatives and a host of friends.

Don Graves wrote "Earnest Gleason from Iowa. He was born Dec. 5 1882 and died on July 25 1907 His parents were Joel H. Gleason and Sarah they also had a daughter Edna May the last information I have is that Joel, Sarah and Edna and infant son were in Lee township by Sioux Rapids Iowa in 1915 and more information on this family would be appreciated."

In 1930 Myra P. Thurston was in Colorado Springs, 75, widowed living with her daughter Mary A. Keen 55 and her husband Ernest B. Keen 50. She was in Denver in 1910. Myra Gleason Thurston, born July 24, 1854 in Pennsylvania, died Jan 4, 1947 is Santa Clara County, California, mother's name Spring.

Sister Mary Lucinda Hippel was born in Louisville, Crawford County, Pa., on August 3rd, 1865. She went west with her parents when she was ten years old. She was married to J. W. Hipple in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, on March 16th, 1884. 67341662

Estherville, Emmet County Iowa January 1, 1930 - Sarah Elizabeth Gleason was born April 9, 1850, in Venango county. Pa., and died In Estherville, Iowa, Dec. 22, 1929, aged 79 years, 8 months and 13 days. She was the third in a family of ten. In the spring of 1877 she came with her parents to Sioux Rapids, Iowa. She lived in or near this town until 1920 when she sold her home there and moved to Estherville. She was married in 1881 to Anton Myers, who preceded her in death ten years ago. To this union were born two children, Orvie Myers of Terril, and Mary Lee of Lake LUllan, Minn. In early life she united with the Baptist church and remained a faithful member the remainder of her life. She leaves to mourn her going her two children, four grandchildren, four brothers, I. G. Gleason, of Haxtum, Colo., J. H. .Gleason of Sioux Rapids, T. J. Gleason of Springboro, Pa., J. D Gleason of Fleming, Colo., and one sister, Mrs. Myra Thurston of Colorado Springs, besides numerous other relatives and a host of friends. She was a quiet, home-keeping woman who will be greatly missed by those who knew her well. So has another full sheaf of life been garnered into the Father's house. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Wells of Webb, from the Baptist church at Sioux Rapids and Interment was made In Lone Tree cemetery by the side of her husband. Appropriate music was beautifully rendered by three ladies from Webb.
