Kansas: Mary A. Hulsopple, daughter of Leonard and Lavinus Hulsopple was
born in Pennsylvania, January 9th, passed away February 23, 1923, aged 81 years
1 month and 22 days. She was married August 19, 1862, at Pekin, Ill., to James
G. Briggs who died September 20, 1891. To them were born three children, Elmer
E. Briggs of Burlingame, William e. Briggs of Scranton, and Lida May, who died
July 16, 1908. In her early life Mrs. Briggs united with the Methodist church.
She is survived by her two sons, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren;
also three half brothers, Benjamin Burkhart of Colorado, William Burkhart of
Topeka and Joseph Burkhart of Scranton. With her husband she came to Kansas in
1865, first settling near Lawrence and afterward moving to the homestead south
of Scranton where the youngest son, William still resides. Mrs. Briggs was a
real pioneer of the state and will long be remembered as a faithful, patient and
sympathetic mother, neighbor and friend. Peaceful be her sleep. Funeral
services, conducted by Rev. Ahrens, where held at the Elmer E. Briggs home on
Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock after which the body was laid to rest beside
that of her husband in the Highland Cemetery. 3-8-1923

Martha Louise Alsup of Santa Paula, passed away December 31, 2009 after a brief illness. Martha was born in Sterling, Colorado, January 12, 1922 to the union of Walter G. Barker and Ella (Briggs) Barker. She was 87 years young.
