January 17, 1912 "Joseph Walek was born mear Pilsen
Austria Hungary, March 19, 1845, and died at his home twelve miles
west of Sterling on Wednesday, January 10th, 1912,
aged 62 years, nine months and 21 days. During his early
manhood he followed the carpenter's trade but at the age of
twenty he joined the army whero he served faithfully for 12
years. During his soldier's career he was married to Miss
Maria Chinavaky. To this union were born seven children,
four girls and three boys. Tbe eldest daugnhter is now Mrs.
Josephine Walek Berkin, th« eldest son, Josepb,
died at the age of 19, eleven years ago. The remainlog
children, County Superintendent, Anna Walek,
Miss Mary Walek, one of the county teacbers, Miss
Louise Walek and the sons, John and Frank, at the parental
home.
The subject of this sketch came to America in 1886,
living in tbe old mining town of Fort What Cheer, Iowa.
Here he was crippled and never fully recovered from the
injuries. In 1888 he removed to Logan county,
taking up a homestead on which he left his family while
he worked in a coal mtn« at Lafayette. Here he was again
crippled and was compelled to spend nearly a year in tbe
hospital in Denver. His health has been poor ever since.
In 1897 he moved his family to Lafayette, but in 1899
they returned to their homestead twelve miles west
of Sterling where they have resided ever since.
The funeral services were conducted Friday morning at
th« home by Rev. William Force and interment was made
in Riverside cemetery.
Mr. Walek was known for his industry and integrity,
a kind neighbor and a loyal citozen. His death
will be mourned by a large circle of friends."

the casual observer must notice. The following are only a few of
them: The fine orchard at the Walek place, the large flock of young
turkeys at Gardner's, the modern poultry ranch at Stillman*s,
the beet fields at B. Van Gundy’s, the garden at Budins,
the alfalfa at the Hand places, the Hereford cattle at Tidwells,
the beautiful lawn and yard at Fred Van Gundys,
the new soft water cistern and house pump at Tompkins,
the hay meadow at Veverkas, and others too numerous to mention."

September 1920 " Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Hornicek of Sunol, Nebraska,
are here today in the interest of business. They ar« also visiting
at the home of Mrs. Hornicek's mother, Mrs. Maris Walek, near
Logan. Mr. and Mrs. Hornicek will imove to their farm in the
vicinity of Logan in the spring, which they recently purchased."

FRANK MARTIN WALEK
November 1927 Greeley "A pretty home wedding was solemnized
Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Benton,
when their daughter Mildred became the bride of Frank Martin Walek.
The house was decorated with pink sweet peas and roses.
Miss Benton attended Ward Belmont and received her A.B.
degree from this college and is a member of the Pi Kappa Sigma
sorority. She took post graduate work at the University of
California. Mr. Walek is the son of Mrs. Anna Walek of
Sterling. He graduated from Denver University and took post
graduate work at the University of California,
and was then employed with the Bureau of Chemistry at
Washington, D. C. From there he went to Cuba and later to the
Hawaiian Islands, where he was employed at the Oahu sugar
mill in Honolulu. Mr. and Mrs. Walek will sail for Honolulu
Saturday, where they will make their home."
FRANK
June 1917 " Frank Walek purchased a Cub tractor from the
Sterling Hardware and Implement company during the early
part of the week."
March 1920 "Frank Walek with two young men
from Arizona left Tuesday for Wyoming, where they will make
their homes on the homesteads they have there."
"Franklin Martin Walek, who retired in 1955 after
working 31 years as a chemist for Oahu Sugar Company,
died Sunday, July 1, 1961, of a heart attack at his home in
Greeley, Colorado. He was 68. Mr. Walek and his wife, who survives,
moved to Greeley in 1955 after his retirement.
He was born in Willard, Colorado. For over 27 years he was
active in Boy Scout work on Oahu and was a member of Central Union
Church. He was past master of Honolulu Lodge 409, F.&.A.M.,
a 32nd degree K.C.C.H. Scottish Rite Mason, past commander of
Kadosh and a member of Aloha Temple of the Shrine.
After moving to Greeley, he was appointed to the Greeley
Museum board, joined the Union Colony Pioneer Society,
State Historical Society of Colorado and Colorado Archaeological
Society. He was graduated from the University of Denver and
served in the Armed Services during World War I.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred;
daughter, Mrs. Robert G. Simpson of Fort Collins, Colorado;
son, William B. Walek of Fort Morgan, Colorado;
a brother and a sister, all on the Mainland."
