September 1898 Julesburg "J. R. Spencer and
W. A. Slussor are going to buy hogs."
June 22, 1899 Julesburg "While in the act of
fixing his windmill, last Wednesday, J. R. Spencer had the
two last fingers on his right hand badly mashed in the
cogwheels. Dr. Mason amputated the little finger close
to the hand, the next finger was taken off
between the first aud second joints. The
hard wind the night before had blown
the vane away and Mr. Spencer was on the tower in
the act of fixing it when he lost his balance and
in catching to steady himself his
fingers were caught between the cogs."
November 1902 Julesburg "The following local stockmen
were on the Omaha market with cattle this week:
P. Petersen, A. Eckhout, C. J. Deßerard, John Frieberg,
Ira Spencer, Frank Rauth. J. R. Spencer shipped a car
load of horses to Central City, Nebraska, Sunday night."
April 1903 Julesburg "J. R. Spencer and wife, and
Mrs. Ira Spencer and children left here Thursday evening
for Central City, Nebraska, where they expect to make
their future home. They were preceded by Ira Spencer,
who started from here Wednesday evening with an emigrant
car of stock and household goods. J. R. Spencer, or
'Spence' as he is familarly known to people all over
eastern Colorado and western Nebraska, has been a resident
of Julesburg for many years, during which time he has
purchased thousands of dollars worth of horses and cattle
from the farmers and ranch men. It is safe to say that
within the last two years he has paid out $25,000 in
the purchase of stock in Sedgwick county alone.
Any man who does this amount of business is a valuable
addition to any community, and Central City is to be
congratulated upon receiving for new citizens
J. R. Spencer and family. Their many friends here
wish for them success and bappiness in their new home."

June 23, 1911 Brush, Colorado "J. R. Spencer took his
own life near his home in this city Monday night about
eleven o'clock. Mr. Spencer had been in poor health,
not having fully recovered from a hard case of pneumonia
he had last winter, and his mind at times seemed to be
affected. He retired as usuul Monday night. Later,
and while his wife slept, he arose, dressed, procured a
razor, proceeded to a point about thirty rods southwest
of his home, on the commons, took his own life by
cutting his throat. The action was undoubtedly
accomplished in a moment of mental derangement.
The unfortunate man then walked back to his barn
where he evidently lay for some time before dragging
himself inside, where he was found by his wife,
who had awakened and missing her husband,
had gone in search of him. Her son, Ira, who was
at lodge, was notified, and hastening to his father’s
side, carried him into the house.
Drs. Turner and Lusby were called, but he had lost so
much blood and the character of the wound was such
that medical skill could not avail, and Mr.
Spencer died at 5:35 Tuesday morning.
James Roma Spencer was born in Michigan,
June 16, 1854. He removed with his parents,
when but a child, to Beatrice, Nebraska, where he
grew to manhood and was married. After his marriage
he removed to the vicinity of Julesburg where he
resided for twenty-two yean, engaged in farming and
ranching, encountering the many hardships incident
to frontier life. About five years ago,
with their only son, Ira, and his family,
Mr. and Mrs. Spenoer came to Brush. In partnenhip
with his son he erected the Blue Front livery barn
and built up a good business,
which they disposed of recently.
The deceased had always been an active and
energetic man. He was a devoted husband, a kind
and loving father, a tender brother and a
steadfast friend. In his heart he carried those
he loved, and was generous in his ministrations to
those in any way dependent upon him.
The funeral services were held from the home
at 10:30 Wednesday morning, conducted by H. W.
Moore, and burial was made in the Brush cemetery.
Besides a devoted wife he leaves an only son,
Ira Spencer of Brush, three sisters,
Mrs. James Harris and Mrs. Dan Freeman of Michigan
and Mrs. Van Chatfield of Washington,
who were unable to be present at the funeral,
and a brother, Eugene Spenoer, of Alliance,
Nebraska. The latter and family arrived here
Wednesday, also Mrs. Grater and Mrs. Squire
of Atwood and Roy Harris, a nephew, of McCook.
Geo. Harris, another nephew, arrived from
Oberlin, Kansas, Wednesday night.
The sympathy of the people of this
community is extended to the bereaved family
in their hour of sorrow."
December 1911 " Mr. and Mrs V. Squires,
of Atwood, are visitihg their niece,
Mrs. J. R. Spencer. "
January 1912 Brush "Mr. and Mrs. V. Squires,
who had been visiting at the Spencer home,
