" Frederick William Ahring was born in
Hanover, Germany, May 15, 1842, and died at his
home in Lincoln, Kansas, Dec. 16, 1919,
aged 77 years, 7 months and 1 day.
He came to America when he was 19 years of age.
Shortly after arriving, he enlisted as a soldier
in the Union Army, where he served 3 years and
7 months.
He married Miss Henrietta Pauline Lang,
April 12, 1869. The first home was established
in Cascanade county, Mo. In 1881 they moved to
Clay county, Kansas, where they lived for
three years; then they moved to Lincoln
county on a farm 9 miles south and east from
town. In 1910 Mr. and Mrs. Ahring moved to the
city of Lincoln, where they have since made
their home. Mr. Ahring was a firm believer
in God and the church, having been confirmed
in the Lutheran church when he was 14 years
of age, and throughout his life he has
declared his allegiance to the faith of that
church. He was a member of the G. A. R.
He is survived by his wife, 4 sons,
William, Lewis, Martin and Frank;
and 6 daughters, Mrs. Lena Jilden,
Miss Emma Manguel (Mrs. Emma Louise Manuel), Miss Louise,
Mrs. Matilda White, Mrs. Anna White,
and Mrs. Ella Dodge.
Mr. Ahring was always a faithful and
devoted husband and father. He provided
well for his family and sought to make
them happy. He paid them the last full
measure of devotion. He will be greatly
missed from the family circle and the
many friends.
The funeral service was held at the
Presbyterian church, Thursday afternoon,
at 2 o'clock, Rev. L. H. McCor-mick
officiating, assisted by Rev. H. C.
Bradbury. "

"Marylyn G. Gertner, 62, of Sterling died Sept. 17, 2005, in Sterling after battling long-term illness. Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Sean Cole officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Mrs. Gertner was born Sept. 4, 1943, in Denver. In 1945, at the age of 2 1/2 she was adopted by Ervin and Ines Bartlett Nehring of Willard. She attended school in Willard through the eighth grade and graduated from Merino High School in 1961. On Feb. 3, 1962 she married Lawrence (Larry) Gertner. They took over her family's farm near Merino in 1963. During that time Marylyn was a homemaker, mother to her five children and bookkeeper on the family farm. She helped out on the farm milking cows, driving tractors and doing whatever needed to be done, including driving back and forth to town for parts. Her favorite thing was driving the truck during harvest.
Mrs. Gertner was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and in past years taught 4- and 5-year-olds Sunday School class, lead Christian women's Bible studies and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Her favorite Bible verses were John 14:6, Isaiah 40:31 and Philippians 4:13. She was instrumental in bringing her husband, Larry, and five children to Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Gertner of Sterling; daughters Diane Kloberdanz and husband Jeff of Sterling, Carol Gertner of Sterling, Karen Tuck and husband Don of Bristol, Va., Karla Kelsch and husband Tyler of Brookfield, Mass., son Ron Gertner of Sterling; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Gertner was preceded in death by her father, Ervin Nebring, in 1962 and her mother, Ines Beckman, in 2002.
