"San Juan Notes, Niagara Gulch, Eureka, Colo., November 14.
ln my letter to you a short time since I promised to write some letters about the early history
of the San Juan country, being detained here, and very busy, I have not had the time to begin
my series of letters, I will give you, and your readers, an account of the hardships, sufferings,
and loss of life by the early pioneers in 1860 and 1861 in what was called the Baker
expedition.
I will begin the history soon after I leave here and get to my Kansas home.
At present I will give you a few mining notes of Eureka district. In my last I
wrote about the sale of the Boomerang mine. Professor Comstock,
the superintendent of the wealthy company that owns this mine, is a
valuable acquisition to the San Juan country, is a mining expert,
a mining engineer, has much experience in meturalligy. The company have a
capital stock of two million dollars: some twelve men are employed and will be
all winter; the long storm of several days duration has retarded the work some.
Powder, provisions and tools for all winter have been packed up to the new camp,
and the boys call it the the 'Angels camp.'
Two sales have heeu made of mines ou the same vein as the Hoomerang,
one called the 'Money Musk' and owned by Mr. Cobb: the other, the Alta,
owned by Mr. John Schofield. The above two mines have been sold for cash
to a wealthy company, and the price paid runs awav up into many thousands of
dollars.
A number of our mining millionares in disguise, are now made happy and the
boys wish them much joy.
The next prominent mine on the same vein and
adjoining the above mines, is the American. It is a splendid mine, shows a
largo Imdy of fine mineral, and is a fortune to the lucky owner. The owner
is an old timer, his name -Jim Bilyien - being well known among many
of the boys in most of the camps.
This vein is a very strong and prominent one and can be
traced for nearly five miles. Lively times are anticipated here for the
next summer. With two such large companies as have lately bought mines and
intend to push the work vigorously next season, as well as this winter,
and with the heavy Kansas City company operating as they intend to next
season, and with the large force of men that will he employed,
we will have a lively camp.
The large and strong and well defined fissure veins in this district
have attracted the attention of many capitalists this season,
who are willing and anxious to invest in true fissure veins.
With the splendid wagon road we now have over the range,
machinery of the heaviest kind can be hauled over the range with ease.
A fortune awaits the party or parties that wish to invest in machinery
to treat, or buy the mineral from the hard working miners.
Pleasure or business trips to the diffeient camps next season will
be in order, No one that can afford it should miss the trip from
Pueblo by the Denver ami Rio Grande railroad over Veta Pass. It is worth
more to go over this pass, with its splendid scenery and with the
magnificent piece of engineering that has been done to construct such
a fine road over a high mountain range. The miners long for the
extension of this road to the mountains. I will come again soon.

Henry married Catherine B. Lopez of Cambridge in Boston,
October 3, 1840 and went west to settle in Lawrence,
Kansas along with his sister.
He commanded a volunteer company in Lawrence during the free state troubles. He went to Denver in 1869 and ten years later founded and settled in Frisco, Colorado. He engaged in mining and other pursuits and held the position of postmaster for nineteen years.
"At 7 a.m., January 27, 1903, Capt. Henry Learned, of Frisco, crossed the “river of death”.
He was born in Massachusetts 84 years ago, where he grew to manhood. After completing his education he took the Western fever and soon found himself a prominent citizen among the early settlers of eastern Kansas. In 1809 the gold excitement brought him to Colorado, and he engaged in business in Denver, at the same time mining in various places in the state. In 1879, Frisco, in Summit county attracted his attention, and he and his good wife arrived there three years in advance of the railroad.
On his arrival there he engaged in mining and merchandising; assisted in incorporating the town, was several times its mayor and for ten years town clerk. He was active in all public enterprises, and made it a point to never miss a Republican convention. In 1883, he was appointed postmaster and held the position for nineteen consecutive years. In 1889, running on the Republican ticket, he defeated Thomas Gannon for county coroner.
About twelve years ago his wife, who for forty years faithfully shared with him the ups
and downs of pioneer life in the West, died at Frisco. Nine years ago he married a second time,
and in his declining years his wife was his sole companion and comforter.
For several years last past he was incapacitated for months. Finally the end came, and a remarkably vigorous and upright life was ended.
Thursday his remains were laid away at Valley Brook cemetery, Breckenridge, by his devoted wife and friends from Frisco, the funeral being under the auspices of the local lodge of I.O.O.F., which order he became a member of in Massachusetts, nearly fifty years ago."
May 1903 "Warranty deed - Henry Learned to Hetta E. Learned: All real estate owned by him in Summit county."
December 1903 "Mrs. H. A. Learned has leased and bonded her mine, the Kittie Innis, to a Denver -
Breckenridge party."
"In the late 1800s and early 1900s, mining settlements and restaurants often employed women as cooks. In larger mining camps, women would run boarding houses. Women also frequently owned property and operated businesses. Jane Thomas owned and operated the Thomas Hotel on Main Street and ran a large dairy ranch just south of town for many years after the death of her husband. Other women, like Hetta Learned, inherited their husbands' businesses and land after their deaths."

November 1873
An itinerant scenic painter, Learned first came to Colorado in 1860 with a group of prospectors in search of gold. He had been living in Kansas with his family. In 1869 he moved to Chicago to become a full time artist and to study under Henry C. Ford. He was later accepted at the prestigious Academy of Design in Chicago. Learned moved back to Kansas and then to Denver in 1874. In 1881 he was hired as a scene painter for the Fort Collins Opera House. He painted sets for theaters in Denver in the early 1880s as well. As with many early Colorado painters, the landscape was his artistic focus.
January 1879 Denver "Boucicault's five-act comedy, Loudon Assurance, needs no introduction at our
hands to the Denver public, in that the theatres of the city, old and new,
have been the scenes of sparkling presentations, in which the spirit of the piece was
well kept in hand from the start to “the death.” Last night the audience was fair,
the support more than good, the setting excellent, and the principal roles only passible,
if so moderate a term will convey the impression. That the Misses Wells have learned the
words must be conceded, but that they have gone far beyond this, hardly their most enthusiastic
friends will be rash enough to state. However, by aiming high one may contrive to hit the sun,
and then the brilliancy of the same will fully repay the blinks it cost to gain it. Dismissing
so remote a contingency from view, the friends of the young ladies are reminded that their
final appearance here and benefit both culminate tonight, when their admirers will have the
opportunity of seeing them in less trying parts than those of Lady Gay Spanker and Grace Harkaway.
The new garden scene, displayed for the first time last evening, is the work of Henry Learned, and is more than creditable in execution and design."
October 1875 Boulder
November 1876 Boulder " The partnership heretofore existing between C. S. Faurot
and Harry Learned, in the house, sign, and carriage painting business,
is this day dissolved by mutual consent, Harry Learned retiring to fill his
commission for paintings of Colorsdo scenery. Mr. C. S. Faurot will pay all
indebtedness and collect all accounts of said firm."
March 1876 "Of the visitors we have been pleased to welcome to the town the past week is Mr. Henry
Learned, of Lawrence, Kansas, the father of Harry Learned, the artist of this city. He is on his way to
the San Juan region, where he secured valiable mining properties last season. "
1876 Boulder "The father and mother of our fellow townsman,
Harry Learned, are here on a visit. Mr. L. will remain a couple
of weeks, and then go to the San Juan mines, where he is interested.
Mr. Learned says we may look for gentlemen of means from
Lawrence, Kansas, the coming summer, who will make a tour of our mines, and
perhaps invest. At least the object of the visit will be to better their fortunes,
if possible."
April 1876 "In company with his fatber, Captain Learned,
Harry Learned went to San Juan last week. He will be gone several months."
February 1877 Boulder
October 1877 Boulder "HARRY LEARNED had quite a scare last week. His little boy
of three years disappeared one morning and could not be found.
After a long search he was found in a grove near the creek, having a splendid time."
September 1878 "Harry Learned's painting of the Vally of the Upper Arkansas has a prominent position in the Rio Grande office."
October 1884 Golden, Colorado "Mr. Harry Learned has leased the old Kleinmaon shop on Jackson street,
rear of the new hotel, and is now prepared to do artistic, sign-writing, paper-hanging,
graining, frescoeing, kalsomining, and all business in that line.
His reputation is established as an artist, and all may be sure of satisfaction."
April 1885 "Harry Learned, one of the finest artists in the United States, has just nrrlvsd in Aspen
Since coming he has nearly completed a very fine view of Aspen.
While the oil painting is not yet completsd, from preurat appearances it would ornament any
gallery in the land. It will be placed in some prominent place for inspection as
soon as completed. Tbe view is taken from Red Mountain.
As an artist and fresoer Mr. Learned oannot be beaten."
