GENREVA AFTER ANDY
October 1922 "Walter Phillips, who several weeks ago married
Mrs. Genreva Bush Kidwell of Sterling, and who within a space of a
few days became conspicuous in Sterling because of his work as a
salesman of stock in the Associated coal company, is in jail at
Salt Lake City on a charge of misrepresentation. according to word
received here. Mrs. Phillips and her little son are also said to be
in Salt Lake City. Phillips first made his appearance in
Sterling as the ostensible representative of the Green Dragon
Company of Sterling. Soon afterward his marriage to Mrs. Kidwell
at Atwood was announced. He then associated with a man named Howard,
in the promotion of stock sales for the Associated coal company,
making his headquarters at the Hotel Graham. He was not received
into the affection of Mrs. Phillips' parents, Dr. and
Mrs. J. H. Bush of Sterling, it is declared.
The charge against Phillips was brought at Colorado Springs,
according to a newspaper of that city. This newspaper recounts
that William H. Lynch of Denver, president of ihe Associated
Coal company, discovered that Phillips had made
'fraudulent representations' to 'local people' and that
investigations by police had shown that 'local investors were
fleecod out of about $4OO on the stock sale, made on the basis of
delivery of coal here at several dollars under the market price.'
It is further stated by the newspaper that Lynch found that
Phillips had disappehred with the proceeds of the sales,
and that he had hired three men, to whom he made
misrepresentations, to conduct a house-to-house canvass.
These salesmen are reported to have said that they turned over
the money to Phillips, who, according to the story,
requested them not to take checks made to the Associated Coal
company, but to take cash only. After considerable anxious
effort, Mrs. Bush of Sterling Thursday learned of Phillips’
whereabouts. She at ength located her daughter in Salt Lake
City. Mrs. Phillips is said to have replied to telegrams
that she would remain with Phillips, who needed her help.
Mrs. Bush left Denver Tuesday evening for Saft Lake City,
where she will seek to have Mrs. Phillips and her little
son, or either of them return to Sterling with her."
October 1922 Fort Collins "Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Lacey had as dinner guests Sunday,
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Dawson and little children, Robena and Charles, Mrs. Fisher, and Mrs. J. H.
Bush and little grandson Jack Kidwell. Dr. and Mrs. Bush have recently moved to Boulder from
Sterling. Mrs. Bush and Jack remained over Sunday."
