"The News' force of linotype operators has set a new figure for an eight-hour shift of an entire force.
The work was done in getting out Wednesday morning's News, and was from the copy sent in as usual
from the editorial rooms, there being no preparation of any copy beforehand. The force was the regular
one on the paper, those who hold the situations, and not men picked from different offices for the trial.
The best previous record made by an entire force was that working on the Albany Journal,
when five men produced a total of 229,591 ems, an average of 45,912 to the man for the eight hours.
The average made by The News force was 50 per cent greater than this.
The following table shows the result per man: Ems. Hours.
C. A. Nichols 84,500 8:00
R. B. Tyler 70,200 7:40
A. W. Stevenson 60,400 7:50
E. C. Leslie 60,300 7:50
George Allen 57,000 7:50
W. A. Collins 55,500 7:50
C. A. Watson 54.500 7:50
Eugene Jordan 51,300 7:50
Total 493,700 Average, 61,712 ems.
Nothing over a one-line head was measured by the operators. The type was nonpareil and agate as seen
in The News each day. The average is figured as though each man worked Uhe full eight hours,
and the average per man was 61,712 ems."
