"John L. Hicks, a prosperous and well known rancher, passed away yesterday at his home three and one-half miles northeast of Phoenix, at one o'clock. He was born near Somerset. Kentucky, September 24th, 1853. He was married to Miss Sarah V. Coffee. November 12th, 1S76. To this union three children were born, Hannah M. (Mrs. Charles Douofrio), Cora and Reuben S. Hicks. They removed from Kentucky to Sterling, Colorado, where Mrs. Hicks passed away. Some time later, Mr. Hicks removed to Oakland, where he was united in marriage to Miss Catherine F. Kennedy, who survives him, together with their three children, Rose, Charles A. and Esther. Twelve years ago the family moved to Phoenix and settled on a ranch on the Thomas road. About a years ago Mr. Hicks suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered. A second stroke last Wednesday was the cause of his death. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic church tomorrow morning at o'clock, burial being Catholic cemetery."
