July 1910 "Saturday evening about 7 o'clock one of the worst
tragedies that has happened in a long time was enacted over near Raymer.
Weld county. If there was a guilty party, all went down before the
murderer's deadly fire, when Ida Mae Todd, the little nine year old,
blind daughter of Mrs. Frank Hanna, and Jerome McGahen,
known as 'Wild Horae Jerry" were killed by Walter Ridetag.
The bodies were both brought to Sterling, arriving here
Monday afternoon about 2 o'clock, having been taken in charge by Jackson
and Hamilton, who had prepared them for burial. The funeral services were
held at the home of the Huffman brothers on Poplar street,
and Dr. Mitchell, of the Presbyterian church, was the minister
in charge. Mr. McGahen was buried Tuesday evening.
Interment at the Riverside cemetery.
Jerome McGahen was between fifty and fifty-five years old,
and lived on his ranch out on Pawnee, with Mrs. Crabb,
a grandmother of Ida Mae Todd, as his housekeeper, and
is a very noted character in this section. A number of years ago
he was nicked named "Wild Horse Jerry" from the fact that he caught
and tamed so many wild horses, and he is known far and near as a
man who would not harm any one. but was always ready and willing to
lend a helping band. After Riseing had contested and got the claim
that McGahen had filed upon, no one every heard Jerry, as he was called,
say any word against him. Little Ida Mae was a favorite wherever she
went. She became blind soon after she was born,
and thus never knew what it was to see the sun shine of the outer
life, but she seems to have had the sunshine within,
that that made her noticed by all with whom she came in contact.
When her mother visited the blind school lately, the superintendent
said to her, I do not see why Ida Mae is not spoiled,
for everybody pets her, and she is the favorite of the whole
Institution. She was smart beyond her years, and even for a
blind girl there was evidently a bright future in store for her.
Just a few mnutes before the shooting was learned here,
Mr. Frank Hanna, her stepfather, had left on the eastbound train,
having been called to Missouri by a telegram stating that his mother
was very ill. Mr. Hanna arrived this morning
in time for the funeral services."
