August 1911 Montrose, Colorado "From the Topeka Capital of August first we note an extract from a letter written by Dr. C. F. Fisher, the noted surgeon, brother of Dr. H. F. Fisher, the Montrose eye epecialist, to Topeka friends, speaks of his leaving on the steamer Megantic, embbarking at Montreal, Canarda:
'Here we are 2,334 passengers and crew in latitude 55, 20 and longitude 37, 42, away up opposite the lower third of British Columbia some hundreds of miles north of Canada and nearly half way across the ocean. We ran alongside of huge iceburgs off the coast of Labrador all Monday afternoon and night and it was cold, necessitating our using blankets and overcoats, a very delightful change from the experience we had in Canada. z 'Some of these icebergs were hundreds of feet long and fifty to a hundred feet high, some with great towers, dome and spire-like promontories, very picturesque and beautiful, the first I have ever seen except in Alaskan waters.
'Now we are in a dense fog and the big whistle, fog horn sometime is called, is blowing continuously, but the ship keeps pounding away at full speed, just the same.

“We have a clean, bright steady boat and a pleasant lot of passengers, among them a number of physician friends going to the Homeopathic Medical congress, (three of them with their wives) and others, making it quite a pleasant trip for me. Dr. Carolyn Putnam, of Kansas City and Chicago friends, are with ua on their way to join a party of teachers on the other side and return with them in the fall.
'I had a decided unusual and novel experience last night, being called after dark by the ship physician, Dr. Spotwood, of London, to see a Toronto boy of 11 years, and at 10 o'clock operated upon him for appendicitis.
His name is Jack Hall, a sweet tempered and very gentlemanly lad. The boy's mother is dead, and his father was taking him to England on a visit.
Dr. Spotwood acted as first assistant, with Dr. Gordon, of Chicago, Dr. Sollis Runnels of Indianapolis, and Dr. Griffith of Montreal, present.
The state of the lad was desperate and very critical. I had the operation in the doctor's office turned into a temporary surgery, and this is the second appendectomy in midocean so far as I know.
Dr. Wiergusted, New York surgeon, operated a case on the Majestic some years ago, and much ado was made of it in the press.
In that case the engines were stopped. This would have been done for me, but the ship was riding ste&dy and there was only a gentle roll on, so I did not think it required - so mine was done at 10 at night under full steam.
It is the talk of the ship and we all hope he may recover, and he has a fighting chance, for at this writing, 18 hours after the operation, the conditions grow better."

"Leonora (Lea) Bennett, 1900-1905
Lea Bennett was the daughter of Sam C. Bennett. After her father’s death, she was appointed temporary custodian on January 18, 1900, when she was 38 years old25 and held the position until June 8, 1905. Her pay was $50 a month, the same as the men who held the position.26 Leonora Bennett was born in Missouri in 186227 and moved with her parents to San Antonio.
Leonora’s father (and her predecessor as the Keeper of the Alamo) printed at his own expense a slim volume that he sold on his account to visitors to the Alamo for fifteen cents.28 Leonora Bennett enlarged this historical sketch and, in 1904, published a book called “Historical Sketch and Guide to the Alamo.” The first 81 pages of the 131-page book is a history of Texas from the appearance of Sieur de la Salle in 1685, through the careers of Philip Nolan, Augustus Magee, and Moses Austin and ending with the battle of San Jacinto. Pages 83 to 107 contain four “historical sketches,” which are probably the text of the tour given to visitors during the period between 1897 and 1905 when she or her father were the tour guides. This part of the book may have been based upon the booklet that Sam Bennett printed and sold to visitors. Following the text of the tour, there is a short history of the other San Antonio missions, including the San Fernando church. Parts 4 and 5 of Miss Bennett’s book are three poems about the Alamo and a list of the Alamo martyrs.29 In 1905, after Miss Bennett’s time as the Keeper of the Alamo ended, she continued to live with her sister at the family home on Dwyer Avenue.30

Their claims are close together, on the uplands 12 miles northwest of Sterling, within view of O. P. Sells' new sod bungalow, and they anticipate no little enjoyment from the life of pioneers. He will establish a poultry farm on a large scale, raising the finest breeds for the local market, and supplying the very highest grades of special varieties of chickens and other fowls for the farmers of this part of the state.
