"At the beginning of the Civil war, he enlisted for service with an Illinois regiment. However, he was transferred to Company K, Eighth Missouri Infantry, as a sharpshooter and participated in a number of the most hotly contested engagements of the war, including the battles of Shiloh and Gettysburg. He was never wounded, but in the engagement at Shiloh his canteen was shot away and at Gettysburg he was knocked unconscious by a cannon ball striking so close to him that the result was as above stated. For six months he was held a prisoner of war in the south and after being exchanged he continued with his command until the stars and stripes were planted in the capital of the southern Confederacy and hostilities ceased."

Another member of the G. A. R. answered the final call Monday when the venerable Jerome B. Curtis passed away at his home on West Twelfth street.
Funeral services were held at the family residence. Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Charles W. Ray, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Mr.
Curtis was a native of Knox county, I11., where he was born October 6, 1838. He grew to young manhood on his father's farm and at the age of 21 enlisted as a valunteer in the civil war. Soon after enlistment he was made a wagon master, and he served in that capacity until he was mustered out on September 21. 1864. After the war he married Jane Wheeler.
Eight children were born to them. His wife passed away April 21. 1878. On October 9 1879 he married Etta Welch, who survives him. For seven years they made their home at Creston, whence they went to Colorado. In 1900 Mr. Curtis and his family came to Columbus. For the last fifteen years he has devoted his attention to railroad contracting.
Mr. Curtis was a member of Baker Post No. 9, G. A. and wbb a devout member of the Methodist church. He
was known to his friends as an unusually companionable man and to his family as a considerate, loving father. Besides his wife, twelve sons and daughters survive him. They are Mrs. John P. Schaefer, Mrs. L. D. Boyd, I. D. Curtis and Mrs. F. C. Durr, of Omaha; Mrs. W. B. Branson, of Kearney; Nettie Curtis, of Chicago; J. W. Curtis, of Columbus; Mrs. Clarence Clark, of Columbus; Leroy, Clyde, Ella and Pearl, who are at the family home here. A brother, J. W. Curtis, of Liberal, and three sisters, Mrs. Louise Ditzel, of Omaha; Mrs. Augusta Galpin, of Wllllamsport, I11., and Mrs. Lena Smith, of Little River, are living.
All the children, with the exception of a daughter in Chicago, were here to attend the funeral. Mrs. Charlotte Marcus, of Iowa, was also here.

"Mrs. Mary Etta Curtis, 74, residing at 3313 Thirteenth street, passed away at 10 p. m. yesterday at her home. She had been in ill health for the last five years, and was critically ill for the last three months. Her death was due to heart disease.
As Miss Mary Etta Welch, she was born on June 23, 1861 in Bureau county, I11. On Oct. 9, 1879 she was married to J. B. Curtis at Afton, and they made their home at Creston, until 1888 when they moved to Loveland, Colorado. In 1890 they moved to Cozad, and lived there until 1900 when they moved to Columbus. For many years. Mr. Curtis was a farmer and also followed the grading contractor business. He passed away on Apr. 23, 1913, in Columbus. Mrs. Curtis, for many years belonged to the Methodist church, but after coming to Columbus was not so active in church work because of impaired hearing.
She is survived by two sons, J. W. Curtis, of Columbus, and Clyde E. Curtis, of Omaha; four daughters, Miss Grace Curtis, Mrs. Clarence Clark and Miss Ella Curtis, of Columbus, and Mrs. Pearl Kutz, of Omaha; one step-son, Lester Curtis, of Columbus; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Fred Marsh and Miss Nettie Curtis, of Omaha; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Charlotte Markus, of Creston, Ia.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow at the Gass Funeral chapel, with Rev. A. T. McFarland, pastor, officiating, and burial will be made in Columbus cemetery. Her son, Clyde E. Curtis and daughter, Mrs. Kutz, of Omaha, and her step-daughters, Mrs. Fred Marsh and Miss Nettie Curtis, of Omaha, and her sister, Mrs. Markus, of Creston, will be here for the services."

July 8, 1964 "Clarence Earl Boyd, 71, a former manager of Eastman Kodak stores, died Monday at his home in Fayetteville, Ark. Mr. Boyd was born in Omaha, and lived in Countryside nine years before moving to Chicago to become district manager of Eastman Kodak stores there. After he retired in 1956, Mr. Boyd moved to Fayetteville. He was a member of the Kansas City club, the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the Kansas City Merchants association.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mildred Boyd of the home; two sons, Robert Boyd, Chicago, and Jerry Boyd, with a law firm in Puerto Rico; a sister, Mrs. Mayme Rickey, Omaha, and twro grandchildren."

She worked at Wool-worths in Columbus and Koziols Grocery Store and Samuelson's Variety Store in Genoa. She was member of the church, its Womens Fellowship and Senior Citizens Band.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Susan Curtis of Columbus; daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Edward Johnson of Genoa; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Norton Beecroft of New Hampshire, and Robert Beecroft of Foley, and sisters and brother-in-law, Genevieve and Irvin Muller of Genoa, and Deloris Benda of Bellwood.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two infant brothers. Arrangements were made by Patricks Funeral Chapel of Genoa."

She was the widow of Clarence J. CLARK, a carpenter & building contractor for many years. The daughter of Jerome W. & Mary E. CURTIS, she was born 12 May 1885 in Adams county, Iowa, later moving to Cozad, Neb., then to Columbus in 1890.
A former dress designer & seamstress, she frequently assisted with costume making for various school programs & at one time assisted in the Adult Education Sewing Classes.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs. Edward M. (Dorothy) RAGATZ of Arlington, Tex. & Mts. Donald L. (Gladys) FRENCH of California; 1 son, Milton D. CLARK of Pomona, Calif.; 1 sister, Pearlann HOGAN of Kansas City, Mo.; 8 grandchildren & 6 great-grandchildren."
