JAMES AND MARTHA
October 1880 Idaho Springs "The marriage of Mr. James Coddington,
of this city, to one of Idaho's fairest daughters, is announced."
James A. Coddington and Martha J. Miller married on
17 Oct 1880 in Clear Creek County, Colorado.
March 1881 "James Coddington returned home last Sunday,
accompanied by his young wife. Jimmy has a heap of handshaking to do. "
August 1881 "August 10. The storm struck Idaho Springs and vicinity
about half past two o'clock Monday afternoon. For nearly an hour the
water poured down in torrents in the city and on the surrounding hills,
and it was but a few minutes until Virginia canon, Soda creek,
Chicago creek, Fall river, Dry Gulch, Hukill gulch and several smaller
gulches were pouring forth IMMENSE BODIES OP WATER into the valley in
which Idaho Springs is located, but fortunately the largest streams
that came from the gulches emptied into the creek either to the
east or west of the city where the least damage could be done,
and the flood of water having more room to spread itself the damage,
not considering that of the railroad, was comparatively little to
what it was in Central and Black Hawk, where the water was
confined to a narrow place. However, personal property in the
city suffered to the amount of $4,000 or $5,000, and the city
suffered nearly two thousand dollars, ONE LIFE WAS LOST,
the six-year-old daughter of H. L. Rich being carried down Dry
gulch. The body has not yet been recovered. The terror and
excitement that the flood created at the time is almost beyond
description, and to recite the incidents of the day would require
a whole newspaper. Virginia canon, whose mouth is at the eastern
end of town, poured forth a most terrific and irresistible
volume of water, the unusually small stream being
SWELLED TO TEN FEET wide. A stream of water six feet in height
issued from Soda Creek, while Chicago Creek and Fall river,
for a while, were equally turbulent. From the mountain that
borders the town on the north, opposite Colonel Doe's and Mayor
Moore's residences, and from Dry and Silvertooth gulches
the water poured down, even from the side of the hills,
as though tremendous reservoirs had broken loose, and it
was from this source that the town was flooded, three feet
of water POURING DOWN MINER STREET, which formed,
for the time, a natural channel, making an easy outlet.
Colorado street, from Fifth avenue to the Beebe house,
was flooded a foot deep, from the hills north of the town.
Sand and rocks, weighing from one to two hundred pounds,
were washed down the cross streets and through houses and
yards. Fifth avenue was filled , to a depth of four feet
with rocks and sand to the width of one hundred feet,
while at the mouth of Silvertooth gulch, a block further
down, the sediment filled in to a depth of eight feet.
A number of residences along here to the north of
Colorado street were flooded, and it seems strange that
they were not washed away bodily in this part of town.
Among THE DAMAGES are the following: James Coddington,
three feet of mud and sand in kitchen and surrounding
house. Damage, $5O."
February 1882 Central City, Colorado "James Coddington, late day clerk at the
Teller House, will engage in mining in Russell district.."

Korndorfer, John Etherington, J L. Stein, H. Nunamaker, M. Neil, Mrs. 0. L. Moore, Mrs. H Wilson, V. P. Wilson and others. Mr. Livingston, of Idaho Springs, will ere long move to his land near Mr. Coddington west of Atwood. Mr. Coddington has his house about completed on his farm six miles west of Atwood, and will soon move his family from Idaho Springs.."
March 28 " Mr. James Coddington has gone up to Idaho Springs after his family. ."
