Thomas Cornelius 'Tom' Crist BIRTH 21 Oct 1885 Centerview Township, Johnson County, Missouri, USA DEATH 8 Oct 1949 Haxtun, Phillips County, Colorado, USA BURIAL Haxtun Cemetery Haxtun, Phillips County, Colorado, USA MEMORIAL ID 59036958.
"Tom C. Crist died Saturday morning, October 8 at the Haxtun Memorial Hospital. He passed away at 9:30 o'clock after an illness of two weeks with pneumonia.
Though Mr. Crist had been seriously ill for the entire time he was in the hospital his death was a severe shock to his family and the community. He and his wife and daughter, Mrs. Edwin Witt, returned to Haxtun September 28 from a two-week trip to Arizona. He was ill when he returned home and was taken to the hospital September 29 where everything possible was done to relieve his suffering.
Tom was Haxtun's postmaster since 1934 and editor of The Haxtun Harvest from September 1922 until the time he took over his duties at the local post office.
He was born in Centerview, Missouri. He spent his early boyhood days with his parents in Missouri and Big Springs, Texas. As a young adult in Missouri, he worked in the printing office and later as a reporter for daily newspapers in St. Louis. During the St. Louis World's Fair he was a member of that city's police force. He came to Phillips County, Colorado in early manhood in an immigrant railroad car. He filed on a homestead south of Haxtun, land which later became known as the Lewman farm. While he often related how he fenced and plowed some of the land he did not prove up on the homestead, but later selling his relinquishment. During a short period here he worked for the old time cattle and sheep operators in the south country. After leaving Haxtun, Mr. Crist was editor of a newspaper at Holyoke for a year or more. He edited a paper that was strongly Democratic in the early days of Phillips County when papers were either Republican or Democratic. Following his stay in Phillips County, Mr. Crist worked many years in the newspaper offices of Denver, in various printing plants of that city and other towns in northern Colorado, as a printer. He was a competent journeyman printer, very painstaking and exacting in the use of types. During World War I he and his family made their home in Fort Collins where he was employed as a mechanic at the sugar factory. Later Mr. Crist was employed in the newspaper and printing plants of Sterling. In the spring and summer of 1921 he was employed in the Haxtun Harvest which at that time was published by its founder, Delevan W. Gee.
Mr. Crist, with his family, came to Haxtun in September of 1922 from Boulder where he had been an employee in the printing department of The Boulder Miner and Farmer. From that time he was editor of The Harvest until he was appointed postmaster at Haxtun by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. For more than a decade Mr. Crist was active in the civic and political life of Haxtun and Phillips County. During that time he served as secretary of Phillips County Democratic Central Committee. In 1932 and 1933 he served as a volunteer member of the Phillips County relief committee.
He was active in all activities for development of the Haxtun territory, especially farming and dairying. One of his interests in furthering the agriculture development of this area was promoting local interest sufficient enough for the employment of a county extension agent for Phillips County. He devoted many years in expounding better dairying for this section and at one time had a fine herd of purebred milk cows at his home adjoining south Haxtun to further promote the dairy endeavor for this region.
Mr. Crist was a lover of outdoor sports. He found pleasure in both hunting and fishing and related often his experiences to his friends for their entertainment. He was an intensive reader and well informed. Early he trained his mind for memory, for hours he could quote poetry and Shakespeare to the enjoyment of his friends. His disposition was an unusual one, both friendly and warm.
His passing is a great loss to his family and friends. In his later life he was a landmark of Haxtun. He will be sadly missed by all. Had Tom been the chronicler of his death, the story of his life would have been brief and simple. He would probably have written on the first line “30”, then his name, the date of his death, and probably the date of his birth. Before the days of typesetting machines, printers setting type by hand always at the end of a story set the figures “30”, meaning the end of the copy or “take,” take meaning the end. Today the term “30” is used in chronicling the passing of a printer or newspaper worker.
Funeral services were conducted at the Church of the Brethren in Haxtun Monday, October 10, at 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon, with the Reverend Leonard Birkin, pastor of the church in charge of the final rites "
