April 19, 1923 "James Franklin Smith, for many years a resident of Sterling while he was employed here at his trade, that of a carpenter, died at 1:30 o' clock this morning at the home of his brother, J. M. Smith at Merino. Bright' s disease was the cause of his death, this ailment following an illness of influenza which Mr. Smith contracted about the middle of February. For several weeks he had been a patient in a hospital at Denver but was brought to the home of his brother in Merino last Saturday. He was 61 years old and was married, although he and his wife had separated. He was a member of the Merino church and of the Knights of Pythias lodge. While in Sterling he was employed by several contractors at various times and also did some contracting for himself. He later opened a general store in Merino and later went to Denver, where he went into business.
He was well known in Sterling. The funeral services will be held from the Merino church Friday afternoon at 2 o' clock and the burial will be made in the Sterling cemetery.
