Displaying the remarkable strength and determination of pioneers, Mrs. Kendel, tho weakened by the shock of the injury, is willing a great fight. Widow of John C. Kendel, former county commissioner and sheriff of Weld county in the early days, Mrs. Kendel now has six children, 11 grand-children and two great grandchildren living.
She was born on a southern plantation in Bolivar county near Natchez, Mississippi, and spent her early girlhood there and in Tennessee, After the civil war she moved with her family to the vicinity of Oxford, Miss., in the northern part of the state. In 1871 she was married to John C. Kendel and they came to Colorado with the rest of the Isom family in 187?. The party included her father, Major N. A. Isom, who was forced to seek a higher altitude on account of asthma, and three sisters, Mary, Harriett and Betty. Harriett and Betty are now believed to be the oldest twin sisters in Colorado. They both reside at Sterling where Harriett is Mrs. D. B. Delzell and Betty is Mrs. Hugh Davis. During their residence in Colorado these twin sisters, who are now 7? years of age, have never lived more than 13 miles apart; Mr. and Mrs. Delzell and the Isoms settled on a ranch 30 miles east of Greeley near what is now the town of Merino. John C. Kendel was a leading sheep man of that section for many years. He was the first democratic county commissioner of Weld county, taking that office in 1881. He was elected sheriff of the large Weld county before it was divided into six connties. The family had moved to Greeley in the spring of 1884. Following Kendel's second term as sheriff he was appointed to fill a vacancy in the office of county commissioner and it was while he was holding that office that he died in the spring of 1S89. The Kendel ranch was later purchased by the Luton Brothers of Sterling. During all her life Mrs. Kendel's principal interest has been her home and her family, but she has an extremely wide circle of close friends. She ia noted for her humor and cheer fulness. She is a member of the Presbyterian church. Six of Mrs. Kendel's seven children are living to give her daily cheer in her struggle for health. Mrs. Kendel is the only woman in Greeley to have six children who are graduated from Greeley State college. J. C. Kendel, supervisor of the Denver schools; A. I. Kendel, deputy clerk of the Weld county district court in Greeley; Miss Elizabeth Kendel, associate professor of mathematics at Greeley State college; Mrs. Albert Johnson of East Leigh, Sask., Canada; Mrs. John L. Asmus, Woodrow, Colo.; Miss Mary Kendel, teacher in New York. The seventh child, James Kendel of Eaton who is now deceased, did not graduate from the Greeloy school but married a graduate of that Institution. His widow now resides in Eaton.

"Mrs. Alice Isom Kendel, 89, pioneer resident and mother of John C. Kendel, director of music in the Denver public schools, died at her home in Greeley September 9, 1935. She had been ill since suffering a broken hip in a fall last December."
