Mildred Lenore (Merris) Carlson passed away on March 27 in Haxtun, at the age of 98. She was born September 11, 1906 to Grace and William Merris in Canon City.

The oldest of four daughters, Mildred spent her early years in Canon City, Sterling, and Atwood. At the age of 16 she moved to Gernsey, Wyoming, where she met her husband, Albin Carlson, through her father. They were married on January 16, 1924 in Wyoming but moved to their new home in Haxtun during a snowstorm.

Mildred lived in various locations throughout her life. Early in Albin and Mildred's marriage, they lived in Haxtun. They also lived in Gernsey so that Albin could work on the railroad, and Holgate, Ohio to help run the Merris family cleaners. They later moved back to Haxtun where they farmed south of town for a number of years before turning the family farm over to son Marvin and his wife Helen.

In Mildred's later years she enjoyed living in California with her daughter Imogene and son-in-law Garth. She loved the California climate with constant sunshine and no snow. She moved back to Colorado after the death of her daughter to be near her granddaughters living in Haxtun and Fort Collins. While living in Loveland she enjoyed regular visits with her nephew Ivar Larson and his wife Donna.

Mildred's two children, Marvin and Imogene, were the light of her life. In addition to her children, she was very proud of her three granddaughters, Susan Garretson, Fort Collins, Sandra Wilson, Plano, Texas, and Shirley Legg, Haxtun.

As the years rolled by, her family grew with the arrival of her great grandchildren, Jennifer Garretson, Greenwood Village, Trevor Mavis, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Christopher Garretson, Houston, Texas, Donald Mavis, Cadott, Wisconsin, Courtney Garretson, Phoenix, Arizona, Timothy Garretson, Tempe, Arizona and Jeffrey Wilson, Plano, Texas. She loved hearing about her family and what was going on in their lives.

She was also blessed with the arrival of her great great grandchildren, Conner Mavis, Kylie Mavis, Kody Mavis, Hailey Mavis, and Tyler Mavis. Another great great grandchild is due in April. She was proud when five generations gathered for a photo.

All through Mildred's life, her focus on her family was apparent. She was a talented homemaker, knitter, and seamstress, was always stylish and willing to share her expertise with her family and friends. She vigorously supported her family's music interest and attended numerous concerts and dances to see Imogene and Garth's band perform.

Mildred worked for many years in the drug store in Haxtun through various owners and enjoyed talking and helping the folks she knew.

She was an avid reader, baseball fan, and in her later years played Scrabble with her friends at the Courtyard assisted living center in Loveland.

Mildred attended the Haxtun Church of the Brethren and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also enjoyed the Highland Center Neighbors Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her children, and her sisters, Opal "Peggy" Tibbetts, Pamela Rowland and Vesta Boltz.

Survivors include her granddaughters and their families, her daughter-in-law and various nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services were held March 27 at Gerk Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m.
