| Wilbur Hillyer, 83, Buena Vista, died Sept. 16, 2003, exactly three months after the death of his beloved wife, Mildred. Memorial services were held Saturday, Sept. 20, at Cornerstone Church in Buena Vista. Wilbur was born June 29, 1920, in Sterling to George Rush Hillyer and Emma (Rauscher) Hillyer.He was married to Mildred Stephens on Sept. 6, 1941. Wilbur and Mildred moved to Climax after their marriage, and Wilbur went to work at the Climax Molybdenum Mine. During World War II, Wilbur was in the U.S. Army in Europe for 35 months from 1943-1946.He returned to the mine on a mine repair crew and moved up to shift boss on various crews, a ventilation engineer, then ended his mining career as a safety inspector, retiring in 1977. His career as a miner spanned 36 years. They lived in the Climax and Leadville areas until August 1977, when they moved to the "banana belt" -- Buena Vista. They also spent several months each year in Phoenix, Ariz. Wilbur loved to hunt, fish and work in his yard and his workshop. One of his greatest accomplishments was to completely build the family home -- a beautiful log house -- in Leadville. While living in Leadville, he was a member of the Leadville Assembly of God Church and then attended Cornerstone Church in Buena Vista. Survivors include: daughter-in-law, Betty Hillyer, Buena Vista; daughter Sharon (John) Stonehocker, Littleton; son Bob (Debbie) Hillyer, Cedaredge; daughter Judy (Frank) Centanino, Casper, Wyo.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.Wilbur was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; son Jerry and daughter Sherril.
