1897 Nebraska State Journal "I talked today with Isaiah Babcock, county Judge, at Grant, the county seat of Perkins county. Grant is way out on the high line between Holdrege and Cheyenne. There's a big strip of country out there that has been getting a black eye for several years. The people who settled there were poor at the beginning and the failure of crops for several years past made some of them still poorer at the end. A good many moved away two and three years ago. Peter Fast, a German who went from York county with almost nothing, in three or four years has paid for ... acres of land is out of debt and has seventy-five cattle. These cattle are worth over $2,000 now." |
