Walter claimed a quarter in section 5, 9 South, 51W in 1890. The tract book has on his line at the far right a reference to Seattle Wash., which may be a reference to later correspondence regarding the claim. Walter paid $10 in 1888 to begin the claim.

"William Harvey Coates was born near Montreal, Canada, May 8, 1833, departed this life at Florence, Kansas, November 6th, 1916, being 83 years, 6 months and 27 days of age. When but a child he went with his parents to Warren, Ohio, where he grew into manhood, and then moved to Grant county, Wisconsin. At the age of 20 years, Mr. Coates joined the Free Will Baptist church, in which communion he spent some time preaching, but soon united with the Christian church, in which he has for more than half a century been an active worker and much of the time in the ministry at his own expense, or in the eldership, always with the one end in view, the exaltation of the Christ and the promotion of His work. Mr. Coates was married January 14th, 1857, to Anna F. Knowlton, of Castle Rock, Wis, and he and his good wlfe had been planning to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary next January.
To this union seven children were born: A. U., Alma A., Althes G., Alta A., Aria A., and twin girls who died at birth. Of these A. U. Coates of Des Moines, Iowa, Alma A. Ridnour of Florence, Kansas and Alta A. Bartholomew, of New Castle, Wyoming, with the widow survive him.
Leaving Wisconsin with his family in 1866, he has since lived in Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa and Kansas, living at Osawatomie several years during Rev. L. B. Ridnour's pastorate at the Christian church at this place, finally moving to Florence about four years ago. In order to live near their daughter, Mrs. Ridnour.
Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church in Florence Kansas, by Troy P, Bess, and the body was laid to rest in the Florence Cemetery the local Masonic lodge having charge at the grave.."

Fort Collins, Colorado "Mrs. Alma A. Ridnour, 88, a Fort Col1ins resident since 1920, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert G. Knight on North Shields street early today. Mrs. Ridnour, widow of the Rev. Levi S. Ridnour, had been active in First Christian church work here for many years and for more than 23 years was a teacher of the Loyal Women's class of the church. She was born at Richland, Wis. Jan. 14, 1860 and married Mr. Ridnour in Dallas county May 22, 1878. Her husband was a minister of the Christian church for 35 years in Kansas and Nebraska and during this time his wife took an active part in affairs of the church. Mr. Ridnour died in 1913. Besides Mrs. Knight, survivors are a son Roy Ridnour of New Orleans, La. and a daughter, Mrs. H. N. Whitaker of Kansas City, Kan., four grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren, and a number of nieces arid nephews. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. E. W. Harrison at the First Christian church at 11 am Thursday. Burial will be in Florence, Kan., where Mrs Ridnour resided prior to moving to Fort Collins."
