"Gerald W. Verhoeff was born March 5, 1914 at Las Animas, Colorado to Garett and Mollie (Doughty) Verhoeff. He passed away on Sept 18, 2004 at Lamar, Colorado. He was preceeded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and a special cousin, Dorothy Colvin and one great-grandchild. Gerald spent most of his lifetime in McClave where he graduated in the first class of McClave High School. From there, he continued his education in Fort Collins. Gerald became an electrician where he wired many homes in the Arkansas Valley. During WWII, he worked for the Defense Department as an electrician where they build airplanes in Cheyenne, Wyoming and the Chemical Depot in St. John's, Utah. He returned to McClave where he purchased a farm and married Leona Robertson. To this union, four children were born. Gerald and his brother Charley worked side-by-side on many building projects including two irrigation dams as well as many water and land projects. Gerald was a farmer, builder, and a conservationist. His family, friends, and all who shared his life will miss him. Memorial services for Gerald were held 10 a.m. Friday, September 24, 2004 at the Peacock Family Chapel with Wayne Burgess officiating. Musical selections included "Daddy's Hands" and "Abide with Me" with Kent Reyher as the soloist and Donna Heddles accompanying on the organ. Following the committal service at the McClave Cemetary, lunch was served at the Hasty Volunteer Fire Station."
