February 1921 "Two young farmer youths are alleged to have been apprehended in connection with a series of robberies committed here Thursday night, when seven stores, the First National Bank of Flagler, a lumber yard office, and a flour mill were entered, and small amounts of money and merchandise taken. When Flagler merchants opened up their establishments Friday morning, they found that the places had been entered during the night. Learning that the robberies had been widespread, the sheriff of Kit Carson courtly was notified, and bloodhounds wore sent for from Colorado Springs. At the C. A. Anderson Shoe and Harness store, a few pairs of shoes were taken. At the W. H. Brown general store, a stock of gloves, and other articles of merchandise were taken. Knives were stolen from the J. C. Straub hardware company. J. A. White, Williams' pharmacy, W. I. Sutton groceries and meats, and the Equity Flour mill had not reported their losses this morning. The Flagler Lumber company's office was entered, the safe opened, and a small amount of money was taken, but the robbers did not disturb checks and valuable papers. The vault of the First National Bank was intact, and no articles of particular value were missed. However, losses are believed small in all cases. In practically every instance, small change was found gone from money drawers. Entrance was effected thru rear windows, carefully removed, or opened by breaking or taking out small panes of gloss. No definite details of the exact amount of loss is available yet. The two farmer lads who are alleged to have confessed to the robberies, are in the eustotfy of the sheriff of Kit Carson county."

Helen E. Sherman born 4 May 1915 died 21 Jan 1999 (aged 83) BURIAL Flagler Cemetery Flagler, Kit Carson County, Colorado, MEMORIAL ID 21496970

Lester Bryan Sherman born 10 Nov 1896 Windom, McPherson County, Kansas, died 8 May 1972 (aged 75) Durango, La Plata County, Colorado, BURIAL Flagler Cemetery Flagler, Kit Carson County, Colorado, MEMORIAL ID 14057748.
"Lester Bryan Sherman was the son of Nellie Adelia Young & Frederick Lewis Sherman. He was first married to Freda M. Ekberg, Mar. 1, 1917 in Windom, McPherson County, Kansas and they had 4 children. Lester & Freda were divorced Dec. 8, 1941. He second married Helen Evelyn Sutton, Jan. 31, 1942 in Kansas City, MO. He was a rancher for most of his life. He was also one of the co-founders of Business Man's Insurance Company."

"Here comes the Judge" ... Somewhere in the great beyond an "All Rise" was issued for His Honor. We used to get a chuckle out of these words growing up. He was "The Judge" to most who knew him well and there were many. Over the years, he exercised his penchant for weak coffee, junk food, spy novels, off-color jokes, and cigarettes until that last avocation got the best of him.
Jerry Sherman passed away in the early hours of January 12th, 2021 due to the agents of emphysema, age and just plain worn out parts. He was surrounded by family and showered with love and attention in his last days, peacefully passing, knowing his legacy was preserved and his progeny intact.
Born in June 1936 in Flagler, Colorado to Helen Evelyn Sutton Sherman, Jerry spent his early years building fences, racing horses, and raising wheat in eastern Colorado. He left home at 15 and managed his own path through high school (Ft. Collins High) business school (University of Denver) and finally, law school (University of Denver Law School) graduating with his Juris Doctorate in 1962. It is an admirable feat finding a way to attend a prestigious school self-supported.
He married Lois Hafling (later known as Crystal Carroll), a Durango girl he met at CSU, in 1959 and the couple relocated to Durango in the mid-sixties. The family remained steadfast Durangoans from then on, and despite divorcing in the late 1980s, Jerry and Crystal remained close to their family and to each other.
Jerry found new love following his divorce from Lois and eventually tied the knot again to Kay Brown from Minnesota in 1995. They remained lovers, friends, and companions in orneriness from there on out. Life is interesting, to say the least, and death even more so as he finished out his last few years living with his 2nd wife in the home of his first wife. Full circle brought them all under one roof in the family home where the entire family was gathered to bid farewell.
Judge Sherman was asked to serve as County Judge in 1966 at the age of 30. He would serve for the next 10 years before stepping down to practice law full time. Over the years he was instrumental in Durango developments such as Shenandoah, Durango West, Tamarron, Animas Airpark, and many others. Between his careers in real estate, development, dance instruction, fast food, hotel management, and the law, he managed to touch many lives and was accordingly touched by so many in Durango that sought him out for guidance and exchange of passionate ideas which kept him challenged and excited. He loved big, laughed often, and inspired many.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Sherman of Durango, his first wife Crystal Carroll of Durango, his three children, Kathi (Kate)/(Gerry Pressman) Engrenn of Venice Beach, California, Scott (Karen) Sherman of Solon, Iowa, and Brett (Lindsay) Sherman of Broomfield, Colorado. His nieces Leslie Carter of Loveland, Colorado, and Darene (Michael) Hiatt of Ft. Collins, Colorado. Between the three children, there are 10 grandchildren that brought him smiles, immense pride, and gratitude which he was more than willing to boast about over the course of the last 30 years.
He was also a member of the Durango Rotary and the Elks Club and, the Sigma Chi fraternity in his college days. He enjoyed skiing, jeeping, dancing, singing, and time with family.
We will miss you Pops.

Lester Bryan Sherman, born November 10, 1896 and Helen Evelyn Sutton, born May 4, 1915 at Flagler, Colorado, ventured into their May-September marriage in L942. "Sherm and Evelyn" settled in Stratton, Colorado the first year of their marriage, and for the greater number of their thirty years together until Sherm died in May of 1972 they lived in eastern Colorado. Sherm had been born in Windom, Kansas and grew up a "trader." His father, Fred, taught him well. Sherm cut his teeth trading with the Gypsies who traveled the country in the early 1900s. Sherm's dad related that a neighbor asked if it was alright to trade horses with Sherm, not wanting to "take advantage" because he was so young. And Fred would reply: "Sure, trade with that boy, and the quicker you send him home with only the halter, the better I'd like it." It was the neighbor that went home with the halter, and trading set in Sherm's blood! Throughout the early 20s, Sherm traded in cattle. He had an eye for judging weights and would travel the country each week buying cattle, trucking them to a rail yard nearby, and shipping to the open market in Kansas City, Omaha, Nebraska, or to Iowa feeders. When Sherm weighed cattle in, he would set the weights on the scale, and most always they were accurate. Sherm's tales were born in the many experiences of his trading, traveling and working with people. From his stint in the 20s ofworking along side ofthe gandy dErncers on the railroads, he had a little dittie that he taught Mary and Jerry (Evelyn's children adopted upon their marriage)

"Robert Marion "Bob" Austring Birthdate: June 16, 1925 Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota, Death: May 25, 1980 (54) Tucson, Pima County, Arizona"

"Evelyn Sutton Sherman lives in Flagler, Colorado at the time of this writing. She usually can be found in Tombstone, Arizona with her sister, Betty Austring, during the winter months."

1986 "For two years, the only thing to break the peace and quiet around Bette Austring's home has been the chatter of the birds. Gone is the rumble of the heavy machinery and the roar of the blasting from the mine that is her next-door neighbor. Gone also is the fear of the wind bringing the spray full of deadly cyanide onto her property. But Austring and many other .people in this old mining boom town are afraid. Plans are under way to reopen the rmine and begin again the , cyanide-leaching process to recover silver and gold from the tailings left by previous operations. But the specter of what happened before the mining operation stopped in 1984 haunts many in Tombstone and has spurred an effort to keep the mine permanently closed. Located within the town limits and just out of sight of the Allen Street tourist district, the mine is viewed by many as a threat to the health of Tombstone's residents and to the tourism that is the mainstay of the town's economy In 1982, Michael Russell, 25, a mine employee, died of cyanide poisoning.
