"Long before the custom of returning marriage certificates to the county clerk was in vogue, or even the issuance of licenses was made a part of the county’s business, Parson Thomas Uzzell was actively engaged in linking men and women as partners for life, as he was reminded yesterday by a letter from W. E. Haner of Seibert, Colo. Haner had seen the parson’s name in The News, and it recalled to his memory his wedding day. It also recalled that he had not been one of the lucky ones to have a real marriage certificate, and he asked the minister, who had made Amanda M. Carey Mrs. W. E. Haner if he wouldn't obligingly send one, now that they have become recognized a part of a marriage ceremony. Parson Uzzell has kept a record of all the marriage ceremonies he has performed each year, and he looked down the list of those united by him in 1880. His books proved a better record than Mr. Haner's memory, as the date of his marriage was found to have taken place a year earlier, April, 1879, instead of 1880. The couple lived at that time .in Leadville, Colo., and were engaged in the confectionery business.

September 1907
"W. E. Haner, Seibert, Colo. Do you know if the United States steamship Raleigh (cruiser) has left foreign parts for San Francisco, and if it has would you let me know? Answer: The Raleigh steamed into San Francisco harbor Friday morning, September 6. While 700 miles off port the Raleigh announced her coming by wireless telegraph. While coming from Yokohama the Raleigh ran constantly awash and much wreckage near the bow of the boat was carried overboard. Upon the ship's arrival at Honolulu a clash occurred between those on the vessel, and the quarantine officers of the island port. It was first insisted by the quarantine officials that the blue-jackets of the Raleigh be denied shore leave and those on the fighting craft lost little time in making complaint. As a result the Raleigh’s men won out and Honolulu was visited at will during the rest of the ship’s stay.
