"Two small children, the oldest of whom was only about 20 months,
were burned to death in a fire that destroyed the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Carr,
five miles west of Cope, Friday evening. According to meager reports of the tragedy
reaching Yuma, the parents had gone to the barnyard to do the evening chores and
had left the little tots in the house. An oil lamp had been lighted and it is supposed
that the oldest of the children either upset the lamp or else it exploded.
When the parents discovered the fire the room was a mass of flames.
The father made a frantic attempt to rescue his youngsters, but as he started into
the blazing room a burning timber struck him across the face and he was barely
able to get back into the open. It is said that the discovery of one of the
infants under the bed caused the father to make his hopeless endeavor to reach
the child. He was severly burned about the head and shoulders and was removed to
a hospital at Seibert. His condition was not considered serious.
The house was built of sod and the fire left nothing but the walls.
Funeral services over the charred remains of the children were held Saturday
afternoon.- Yuma Pioneer.
