1928 "Plainville, Kansas. Last Monday, as Mrs. C. K. Fike went past the garden hedge fence, she noticed a large hawk in the hedge that stood and gazed at her and did not seem to be afraid. Mrs. Fike waved her apron at it, and to her surprise the bird hopped down and set its talon deep into her ankle. She grabbed the bird by the head and in less time than it takes to tell the story the hawk loosened its hold on her ankles and set its talons deep into both of her hands, which gave her more pain than she could stand. Mrs. Fike dropped to the ground and managed to hit the hawk with her knees and crush it so it loosened its hold on her bleeding hands. As she was on her knees she grabbed the savage bird by its head and pulled the head off. She had some difficulty in getting to the house, as she was very nervous with excitement and some weakened by the loss of blood. All lacerations were soon dressed and she is fast recovering, but will ever be shy of any hawk, and does not wish to get near enough to salute one with her apron. She was some bloody sight when she reached the kitchen door. All hawks had better keep their distance from now on, for Mrs. Fike can handle a Winchester shotgun almost as well as Buffalo Bill, but does not care for another close knockout.
The Rooks County Record."

"Died: In Black Hawk, March 26th, 1929, Peter Rundquist, aged 69 years. Mr. Rundquist was born in Sweden in 1860, and had been a resident of Gilpin County for over 50 years, and was universally esteemed by all who knew him. For years he had charge of different stamp mills in Black Hawk, was one of the best mill men on the creek and gave the miner fair and square dealings when his ore was sent to him for treatment. He had been a member of the City Council a number of terms, and at the time of his death, was still a member, and took great interest in city affairs. A hard working and industrious citizen, a man well-liked by everyone, he has left a record that anyone could be proud to bear with honor. The accident he suffered several years ago while getting off an auto, which fractured his hip, left him a cripple, and he was unable to do manual labor since, and the severe injuries he suffered is believed to have been one of the causes for his early death.
He is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Esther Brockman of Sugarite, New Mexico; a son, Curtis, in Colorado; and another son, Oscar, in Chile, South America. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, with interment in Crown Hill Cemetery, Denver."
