August 26, 1916 Hugo, Colorado "After a lingering illness of about ten months with diabetes, Mrs. Emma Sofia Johnson, beloved wife of S. Augustus Johnson, passed away at her south side home early Monday morning, after l y ing unconscious Since about two o’clock Sunday afternoon. All that medical skill could do was done to counteract the dread disease, and with her devoted husband she spent last winter on the Pacific coast, feeling somewhat improved in tht lower altitude. They had just returned a week ago from an outing in Estes Park, and Mrs. Johnson bore her suffering with christian fortitude, being always cheerful and pleasant in her home and with her many friends.
The funeral was held at the family residence, Wednesday afternoon, and the services were conducted by Rev. J. E. Ellis of St. Michael's Episcopal church. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, and many of her former friends from Flagler were in attendance, and it was the largest crowd at a funeral in Hugo in many a day. Nineteen auto loads of sorrowing relatives and friends journeyed to the cemetery, where the impressive ceremony of the Royal Neighbors was given by Hugo Camp, who were in charge. The pall bearers were Messrs. P. O. Hedlund, W. D. Owen, H. C. White, W.E. Conrad, Ed. Reikenberg and E. I. Thompson.
Emma Sofia Johnson was born in Sweden March 17, 1859, and came with her parents to the United States when she was eleven years of age, locating at Titusville, Pennsylvania, where she grew to womanhood. She united in marriage with George L. Cornwell, May 5, 1895, and located at Flagler, where he had built for his bride the best and most modern residence in all Eastern Colorado. Mr. Cornwell had formerly resided in Hugo, and was engaged in the lumber business, which which at a later day was to become the Johnson Lumber yards and was recently sold to the Hugo Lumber company, owing to Mrs. Johnson's failing health. Mr. Cornwell passed away at Flagler in 1899.

G.L. Cornwell had a store in Georgetown, Colorado in 1875-1876 newspapers, and was succeeded in 1879 by G.W. Warner.

George Cornwell claimed a quarter in section 35, 8S 51W on June 14, 1897.

On March 6, 1902, Mrs. Cornwell became the wife of S. Augustus Johnson and they continued to reside at Flagler until five years ago, when they acquired the lumber yard here, and built their present cozy and modern residence in Hugo. Mrs. Johnson was the president of the company which bore her name, and was a very bright, capable business woman, as well as a devoted wife and mother.
She leaves a lonely husband and son, Master Robert; a brother, John M. Burquist of Brea, California, and a sister, Mrs. Hilda Coon, of Burdett, New York, to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother and a faithful sister, and the citizens of Hugo have lost a true friend.
Mrs. Johnson became a member of the Methodist church in her girlhood, and in Flagler joined the Congregational church. She was the first worthy matron of Palestine Chapter No 92 of Hugo, O. E. S.., and became a member of the O.E.S. at Burlington, Colorado eight years ago. She was also a memeber of Palestine Chapter No. 210 of Los Angeles, California, for which Hugo Chapter was named. She became a member of the Royal Neighbors at Flagler a number of years ago.
Mrs. Johnson was always a cheerful and active worker in the church and Sunday school, and took pleasure in her lodge work. She was a true Christian woman; a loyal friend, and of very companionable disposition, and her lonely husband and son have the sincerest sympathy of a host of friends in their bereavement."

Emma S. Johnson is buried in Evergreen Cemetery Hugo, Block 9, Lot 12, Section 1 Memorial ID 9190124.
