February 8, 1899 " Edward B. Simpson, a prominent and wealthy farmer of this county, living three miles west of town, shot and killed himself this morning. four miles southwest of Iola, committed suicide last Tuesday
about 8:30 o'clock by shooting himself with a

calamity was brought to town in the morning by two of
Mr. Simpson's neighbors and telegrams were at once sent to
brothers of the deceased, one at Essex, Iowa,
and the other at Elliott. Mr. Simpson
seemed to be a man of means, moved here from Iowa
and bought the Clark farm last July. He has not been in
good health for some time and complained a great deal.
On Tuesday he got up apparently as well as usual. His
wife was working over the kitchen stove and noticed him
pick up the rifle from the corner of the room,
but thought nothing of it as he has used the weapon
almost daily all winter. She was startled
by the report of the gun, and turning saw her
husband."
