Philora (Hunter) (Morse) Mitchell, 8 South 50 West


In 1860 Ogle County, Illinois, Flora Hunter is 10, born in Massachusetts, with Wilson Hunter born in England, and Sarah Hunter born in New York, both 38.

In 1865 Shawnee County, Kansas, F. Hunter is 15, single, born in Massachusetts, with her parents Wilson Hunter 45 and Sarah 50. John Frederick is also 15.


Flora is a servant to the Bailey family in 1870 Topeka.

In 1880 Topeka, she's 30, married to John S. Morse, 35, with Charles 8 and John 5.


John Sawyer Morse 1846-1908 is buried in Topeka, with Philora B. 1850-1933 # 12248512.

Philora claimed 240 acres in sections 1 and 12, 8S 50W, Kit Carson County, Colorado in 1917.

1917 Wray, Colorado "Well, well, well. It is actually true according to the records at the court house that our old friend, J. A. Mitchell, has taken unto himself a wife, and we are wondering, if he did it to avoid the draft. Well, anyhow, Hager, here is hoping that it will be more peaceful than war."

1938 El Paso, Texas "Mrs. Laura Hinshaw's biggest Christmas present today was a letter from her father whom she hasn't seen in 41 years. 'It was the strangest sensation I've ever had' she said. 'I had never received a letter from him and had every reason to believe he was not living.'
Mrs Hinshaw lives at 3412 Van Buren street. She is 42. Her father and mother separated when she was one year old. A Contractor. Her mother and stepfather, A. B. Conrad died several years ago. She has lived in El Paso since 1913. Mrs. Hinshaw's father John Dolly Morse is a building contractor in Niles, Michigan, she learned today She also discovered she has four half-brothers and one half-sister. 'My father's mother Mrs. Philora B. Morse of Topeka Kas died in 1932' said Mrs Hinshaw. Through correspondence with her I learned that my father was alive until that time I sent him a Christmas card every year without hearing from him. Then today I opened this letter and it was a big surprise. Her father is 64. 'He wants me to visit him' said Mrs Hinshaw. I will make the trip as soon as possible. I'm anxious to see what my father looks like and talk with him strange that may sound/ She said the Christmas card she sent her father this year was to have been the last try. I had just about given up she said."
