MINNIE'S FAMILY

Lovina E. King was born December 16, 1849, in Syracuse, NY, and was called to her Eternal Home January 23, 1926, at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 7 days.
She united in marriage with Newton R. Jenison, on March 12 1864. They came to Kansas in 1869, settling in the vicinity of Onaga. To this union seven children were born; George Newton, who died in infancy; Mrs. Nellie M. Kelly, of Onaga; Miss Laura May Jenison of Holton; Mrs. Emma J. Adams of Onaga; Mrs. Minnie Alma Herrick, of Ottawa; Charles H. Jenison, who died at the age of three years and Miss N. Pearl Jenison, of Chicago. Besides the children there are twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild; one sister, in Rochester, NY; one half-brother, in Wamego, and one half sister in NY, who remain to mourn her departure.
Her husband, N. R. Jenison, died October 30, 1880, leaving her to provide for and educate five small children, the oldest of whom was about 13 years of age. Then followed years of toil and hardship, during those days when even strong m** ****, and she struggled on. She lived to see her children well educated and comfortably situated in life.
For many years she was a faithful member of the Baptist Church. Her religion was her daily life; her Savior was her constant companion, friend and helper.
Thus an affectionate wife, a loving devoted mother, a kind neighbor and friend has been summoned home. Her faithful services in the church and ministries of kindness in the community will long be remembered and appreciated.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church Monday morning, in charge of the pastor, Rev. A. A. Van Sickle, and interment given in the Onaga Cemetery.

Francis and Minnie Herrick are in Pottawatomie County, Kansas in 1900.

1902 Onaga " Frank Herrick will move on the Taylor land. "

1904 Onaga "Tuesday night about one o'clock John Taylor, John Clark and Frank Herrick woke up the city marshal to get a safe place to lock up a fellow that has been prowling around their neighborhood. The man has no abiding place, but goes to the houses begging when the men folks are away. Tuesday night they caught him in the Victor school house, and brought him to Onaga. It is the same man that was taken to Westmoreland about a month ago, and from there turned loose with instructions to leave the county. But he didn't leave. He gives the name of Sam Roberts, is about 25 years old and says his home is in Lexington, Neb., though he has not been in Nebraska for four years. He says he don't believe in working and don't want any labor. He is filthy in appearance and seems highly pleased to be in the lock-up where he can rest and eat. He is thought to be demented, but he bears every indication of being a thorough vagrant. Wednesday afternoon the men who brought him in came to town, and not caring to bother more with the man, he was turned loose again. They offered him a ticket to Leavenworth. This he refused, saying he would walk out of town. Marshal Crumbaker and Mayor Richardson pronounce the fellow a thorough tramp and see no indications of insanity. Roberts said he had been tramping for four years. The night he was arrested he bummed four suppers before seeking a lodging place in the school house."

Minnie Alma (Jenison) Herrick, born 1876 in Buffalo, New York (per the FindaGrave listing!), dying in Oakland California in 1935, is buried in Onaga, Kansas, # 61798862.
"On a beautiful moonlight night, December 6, 1876, a baby girl came to brighten the home of her parents, Newton R. and Lovina L. Jenison. She was of cheerful disposition in childhood and remained so through life, always trying to see the “silver lining in every cloud”. This characteristic especially endeared her to her family and won her many friends. By the influence of her cheerful disposition she led many to believe in a living and loving Savior. She was talented in music and art. In her girlhood she loved to sit in the evening twilight picking her banjo and singing her favorite ditties.
She grew to womanhood on the farm where she was born, five miles southwest of Onaga, Kansas. On September 15, 1898 she was united in marriage to Frank M. Herrick. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Lora Livina Williams, of Washington, D. C. and Shirley G. Herrick, who was with his mother at the time of her death in Oakland, California, December 13, 1834 SHOULD BE 1934. Most of her life was spent in or near Onaga, until the summer of 1922 when the family moved to Ottawa, Kansas where her husband still resides. For many years she was a member of the Onaga Baptist Church which she joined at the age of 15. She and her sister, Emma, were baptized in an outdoor pool near the Rolling Prairie schoolhouse by the Rev. William McDermont, pastor of the Onaga Baptist Church at that time.
Her religion was her daily life; her Savior was her constant companion, friend and helper. In her home she was ever faithful in her service for those she loved. She was a most devoted mother, who cheerfully made any sacrifice, no matter how great, if it would in any way promote the welfare or happiness of her children. She was one of whom it could be truthfully said, “She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and he praiseth her”.
Funeral services were conducted at the Onaga Baptist Church Sunday afternoon in charge of one of her former pastors, Reverend J. W. Bayles, assisted by Reverend M. N. Davis. "
