GEORGE W. and SUSAN (Street) Rose

George Willis Rose was born on 11 July 1838 in Hillsboro, Montgomery Co., Illinois.
He married Susan Henrietta Street, daughter of James Street and Mary Humphrey, on 26 May 1863 in Princeton, Mercer Co., Missouri.
Willis Rose, 1800-1862 is buried in Winterset, Iowa # 109742663, with Charlotte (Loving/Loven) Rose 1793-1886 in another cemetery in Madison County.
In 1870 Madison County, Iowa, George is 29, Susan 23, with Clariet 6, Jasper 4, and Marian 2.

George was appointed the postmaster in North River, Madison County, Iowwa in April 1872.
In 1880 Madison County, Geo. 42, is farming, Sarah 36, C.M. 15, J.N. 13. M. 11, E.A. 9, E.B. 7, J.M. 2, and V.E. two months.

Madison County Iowa History
ROSE, GEORGE, farmer, Sec. 5; P.O. Dexter; is a son of Willis and Charlotta ROSE, and was born in Montgomery county, Illinois, the 11th day of July, 1838; his parents removed to Shelby county, Illinois, in 1840, and remained there until 1850, when they removed to McLean county, Illinois, and lived there until coming to this county in 1852; they settled on section 5, this township; the subject of this sketch was then fourteen years of age, and he assisted his father in making the farm he now occupies; in 1861 his father died; of the 175 acres of land purchased by his father, 120 acres had, previous to his father?s death, been sold under mortgage, leaving them only fifty five acres; Mr. Rose by industry, close attention to his duties, combined with good management; was able, before the time for redemption had expired on the 120 acres, to redeem it, and now owns 280 acres; on the 26th day of May, 1863, he married Miss Susan H. STREET, daughter of James and Polly STREET, of Shelby county, Illinois; her father, James STREET, previous to this time, had died, and her mother again married Moses POWELL, and with whom Mrs. Rose was at this time living in Mercer county, Missouri; their family consist of six children: Clara May, born December 19, 1864; Jasper Newton, born December 24, 1866; Marion Monroe, born December 13, 1868; Ella Avice, born November 30, 1870; Edna Browning, born November 18, 1872; John Milton, born November, 1877.

In 1900 Kit Carson County, George, born July 1838 in Illinois, is married 37 years to Susan H. July 1845 Illinois. She's had nine kids, all living. Lena V. March 880 , Nettie Nov 1883, and Francis R. Sept 1886, were all born in Iowa.
On the same page is John Rose, March 1836 Illinois, married 35 years to Lucinda A. Sept 1846 North Carolina. She's had four kids, three living. Harry D. Dec 1884 Iowa is with them.
In 1906 George Rose, Jasper M. Rose, John Rose, and John M. Rose were all members of the Burlington, Colorado Masonic Lodge.

Harry D. Rose cash-claimed a quarter in 20, 8S 49W in 1914.
George Rose cash-claimed a quarter in 8, 8S 49W in 1891, and another in section 19 in 1905, and another in section 19 in 1911.
In 1910 Seibert precinct, George 72, born in Illinois, and Susan 65 are farming.
In 1920 School Dist No. 15, president was J. M. Rose, and secretary was George Rose, of Seibert.
J.W. Rose was president of Dist No. 23.
George and J. Milton Rose both were paid for road work in 1912>
George 1838-1915 is buried in Seibert # 37920443.



George Rose was born in Hillbourough, Illinois and died at 11:30 o'clock on Sept. 18, at Dinuba, Cali. Death was to acute pneumonia.
Mr. And Mrs. Rose in company with their son, Milt, wife and child left the 25th day of August for a tour of the west and a trip to the Exposition at San Francisco.
Death came suddenly and unexpectedly while the party was visiting at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Clara Heimbach.
Mr. Rose had not been feeling very well but got up as usual Saturday morning and ate a light breakfast after which he had lain down as he complained of not feeling well. A physician was summoned and immediately responded to the call but the spirit had left its house of clay.
When Mr. Rose was a young child his parents moved to Winterset, Iowa where he resided for a number of years.
In 1862 he was united in marriage to Miss Susan H. Street. The young couple moved to Madison county, Iowa, where he followed his chosen vocation for life, that of farming. In 1887 he and his family moved to Eastern Colorado. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Rose have lived on "Lower Water Ranch" which is one of the best improved farms in this section of the country. Mr. Rose was quite a devotee to the growing of alfalfa and was well versed regarding its adaptation and cultivation in Eastern Colorado.
Mr. And Mrs. Rose raised a family of nine children and the father was the first to be called from the family circle. Four sons, Jasper N., J. Milt of Siebert, Colo., Marion M. of San Francisco, Cali., and F. Rollie, of Minturn , Colo. The daughters are: Mrs. Clara Heimbach, of Dinuba, Cali., Mrs. Lena Smith of Imperial, Cali., Mrs. Ella Bloss of Deer Trail, Colo., and Mesdames Edna Priest and Mettie Shanahan, of Seibert. He also leaves 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Two brothers are left, Henderson Rose of Dallas City, Ill., who is past 87 years old and has made the trip alone twice this summer. Once to visit the brothers and the last time to attend his brothers John Rose, of Burlington, Colo., who is 85 years old. Besides these he leaves his wife who for over 53 years shared the sorrows as well as the joys side by side which comes into every life. Mrs. Rose was just seven years younger than her husband their birthdays being July 11.
Mr. Rose was a good citizen, an honorable upright man and was well known and esteemed throughout the county.
The body was brought in Wednesday night and services were held at the church Thursday afternoon, Rev. I E Hartman officiating. Many beautiful floral offerings covered the alter and casket. The Masonic order, of which he was a member for over 50 years, preformed (sic) their beautiful burial rites over the body of their brother. He together with his sons Milt and Jasper, belong to the Flagler lodge.
Interment was made in the Seibert cemetery. Many friends extends (sic) sympathy to the family. Undertaker W. O. Campbell of the Hesserman Undertaking Co., came over from Hugo Thursday and conducted the funeral of George Rose. He also brought the hearse over from Hugo.
John A. White, G. W. Runtley, J. W Alexander, E. T. Epperson, C. W. Clements, C. J Anderson, H.H. Kliewer, W. A. Borland, A. L. Lockwood, and H. L. Widenheimyr were the brother Masons from Flagler who came down to attend the funeral of George Rose. The resident members who assisted in the service were: G. W. Klockenteger, A. M. Blumberg, and W. S. Bruton.
Mrs. Lena Smith, of Imperial, Cali., Mr. and Mrs. Bloss, of Deer Trail, Colo., Rollie Rose, of Minturn (sic), Colo. and Herbert Heimbach, of Dinuba, Cali., attended the funeral George Rose. Mesdames Smith and Bloss and Rollie Rose are children of the deceased. Messrs Bloss and Heimbach are sons-in-law. Mr. And Mrs. John Rose of Burlington and Henderson Rose, of Dallis (sic) City, Ill. Were also present . John and Henderson are brothers of the deceased.

Funeral services were held at the Seibert Evangelical Church on Wednesday afternoon, January 2, 1935 for Mrs. George Rose, who passed away on December 31. Rev. T.A. marks officiated and burial was made in the Siebert Cemetery. A quartet, consisting of Mrs. John Schekel, Miss Florence Sheets and Messrs J.E. and Robert Andre sang three appropriate numbers. A large number from this and other localities were present in honor of their beloved friend.
Susan Henrietta Street was born July 11, 1845, near Shelbyville, Illinois and died December 31, 1935 (sic) near Seibert, Colorado, having reached the age of 89 years, 5 months, and twenty days.
Her early years were spent in Illinois, later moving with her mother and family to Missouri where she lived until her marriage in May 1862 (sic—1863) to George Rose.
After her marriage, she moved with her husband to Iowa, living in Dallas County (sic-Madison County) until the fall of 1887 when the family came to Colorado, locating near Hoyt and later moving to a homestead near Bovina.
In 1898 the family again moved to the Seibert community where Mrs. Rose has since resided. In the fall of 1915, Mr. And Mrs. Rose with the J.M. Rose family went to San Francisco to visit relatives and to attend the World’s Fair. While on this Mr. Rose contracted pneumonia from which he never recovered and which caused his death.
Mrs. Rose leaves to mourn her departure three sons; Marion M. of San Francisco, Francis R. of Seattle and J. Milton of Seibert; Four daughters. Mrs. G.D Smith of Brawley, California, Mrs. H.G. Heimbach of Bovina, Colorado and Mrs. J.H. Priest and Mrs. Mettie Love of Seibert. Besides the children there are 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and many neighbors and friends who will miss her.

Jasper N. Rose proved up a quarter in 19, 8S 49W in 1897.
He was in the Phillipine Islands in 1900, Company C. of the 44th, infantry.
He married Elsie Alice Dickson in 1915, and they're in Seibert precinct in 1920, Jasper 53, Elie 28, with Eveolina 3.

Jasper N. Rose 1866-1929 is buried in Seibert # 37920503, and # 126520532 has his wife Elsie 1891-1974 buried in Everett, Washington.
Elsie is farming in Kit Carson County in 1930, 38, with Evalena J. 13 and Norman E. 6.
In 1940 Evalina is married to Jacob Ritland, and they're in Snohomish County Washington in 1940, with Jackie 5 and Joyce 1, both born in Washington. Elsie Rose 48 and Norman 16 are with them.
Elsie 1891-1974 is buried in Everett # 126520532.

John M. Rose proved up a quarter in 24, 8S 50W in 1908.
J. Milton Rose 1877-1951 # 36382953 and Minnie C. 1888-1946 are buried in Seibert.

CLARA

Clara Mae Rose 1864-1946 married in 1889 Herbert G. Heimbach, 1860-1947 in Kit Carson County. . They moved to California, and back to Bovina in 1930 iand 1940. They're burind in Bovina # 55115799.

MARION
Marion M. Rose married Myrtle Hendricks, and they're in Noble County, Oklahoma in 1900,. Marion was born Dec 1870 in Iowa, married six years to Myttle June 1875 Missouri, with Raymond Dec 1895 Colorado. On the same page is Oliver 51 Hendrix with Tmson 45, Indiana, and Eulah March 1884 Missouri.
Myrtle died in 1906, per one tree, and is buried it Atchison County, Missouri.
Marion is single in 1910 Seattle, in a lodging house with Raymond 13.
He married a Myrtle Dougherty, per one tree, and they're in San Farncisco in 1920, Marion is 51, Myrtle 33, Aileen 5, and Inez 2.
In 1930 San Francisco, Marion is 61, Myrtle I. 43, Aileen M. 15, and Inez M. 13.
In 1940 San Francisco, Marion is 72, Myrtle 53, Aileen 25, and Inez 23.
Marion, born Dec 13, 1868, died in San Francisco Nov 8, 1952, and is buried in San Mateo County # 87651674.
and so is Myrtle, dying 1963 # 87651682.

ELLA
Ella married Elmer B. Bloss February 4, 1893, recorded in Lincoln County, Colorado, and Elmer proved up a quarter in 12, 9S 55W, Lincoln County, in 1895.

Elmer E. is in Kit Carson County in 1900, Elmer is a laborer, March 1863 Illinois, with Ella Nov 1870 Iowa.
Ella Bloss, widowed, is with mother Susan Rose, 73, also widowed, in 1920 Seibert precinct. Mettie Shanahan, 37, married but no spouse, is with them.
They're still together in 1930 Kit Carson County, and daughter Mattie W. Love 46, Iowa is also with them , divorced.

Ella 1873-1933 is buried in Denver # 117275033, with Elmer 1861-1919.

EDNA

Edna married James H. Priest about 1891, and in 1900 Kit Carson County he's stock raising, born June 1862 Ioio, with Edna B. March 1870 Iowa. Zella M. August 1892 and Olive E. Sept 1893 were both born inCOlorado.
James proved up a quarter in 21, 8S 49W in 1894, and timber-claimed one in section 29 in 1896.
They're in Kit Carson County in 1910, with Zella 17, Evelyn 11, and Effie 1.



In 1920 Zella and Evaline are with them, both teachers. Effie is 10.

In 1930 James and Edna have only Effie P. 21, with them.
James and Edna are alone in 1940 Kit Carson County. Per one tree, Effie had married Philip H. Cogswell in Massachusetts, and that's where she died Nov 29, 1989.

Edna 1872-1961 # 37920349 and James 1860-1952 are both buried in Seibert, with an infant Nov 19, 1893. |

METTIE
Wiliam D. Shanahan and Mettie Rose , both of Seibert, married Dec 24, 1906 at Bethurne, Colorado, witness Rollie Rose.

In 1910 Kit Carson County, Mettie W. 26 is married to William D. Shanahan , 27.
William Shanahan claimed one tract in 31, 7S 49 W in 1911, another in 3near it in three different sections in 1913, and another in 1914. in 1, 8S 50W.

William and Mettie are in Kit Carson County when he registered for WWI, farming.
In 1919 Metta Shanahan was teaching in the West Fair Haven School, Kit Carson County.
William D. and Mettie W. Shanahan divorced in Kit Carson County in 1920, and he married Myrilla Dillon August 4, 1920, recorded in Adams County.
Mettie W. Rose married Don Love January 2, 1922, recorded in Denver.

In 1925 Denver, Don Love is a yardman for McPhee & McGinnity. He and Mettie W. live at 1335 Inca.
Don and Nettie W. Love divorced in Kit Carson County in 1930.
Don is divorced in 1930 Denver, and Donald William Love married Virginia Morgan Dec 24, 1936, recorded in Denver.

Mettie W. Love 1883-1979, is buried in Bovina, Colorado, # 55115452.

In 1850 Polk County, Tennessee, George Hoppers is 46, Lucinda 30, with Louisa J. 8 and Mary A. 7, "Loucindia" 4
In 1856 Madison County, Iowa, Willis Rose is 53, Charlotte 50, with John 20.
John Willis Rose married Mary Gilleran in Madison County May 11, 1856.
Van Meter town, Dallas County, Iowa "Hoppers, G. W., laborer."
This is likely the George Hoppers marrying Martha Burton in 1870, dying in Dallas County in 1887 at age 36 from a coal mine accident.
In 1860 Madison County, Iowa, Lucinda Hoppen is 15.
John Rose is also in Madison County in 1860, 24, with Mary 25. They have John W. 4, Martin E. 3, and L.B. Hughes two months.
ROSE, JOHN, farmer, Sec. 7; P.O. Dexter; born in Montgomery county, Illinois, in 1836; at the age of two years his parents moved to Shelby county, that State, remaining there nine years, removing to McClain county in 1847 and, early in 1852, settled on the banks of North River, in Madison county; married in this county May, 1856, to Mary GILLERAN, a native of Ireland, who died in February 1863; (the stone in St. Patrick's Cemetery has death of February 14, 1864 - aged 28 years. Mary (Gilleran) Rose - d/o Dominick & Ellen (Flanagan) Gilleran - w/o John Willis Rose))by this union there are three children living: John M., Francis J. and George T.; Martin E. died November 2, 1865, aged seven years; December 1, 1864 was married again to Lucinda A. HOPPERS, a native of North Carolina; by this union have two children living: James L. and Charlotta J.; Charles H. dying while an infant; Mr. Rose?s family were among the earliest settlers in this part of the county, and were the only inhabitants of what is now Jackson township for a short period, having their nearest neighbor six miles away, and having to haul logs to Winterset for their lumber; Indianola furnished the nearest grist-mill, and not being very reliable, they frequently had to grind corn to make bread on a common tin grater, or starve; May 1860, the township was organized, and in the following October Mr. Rose was authorized to notify the voters to meet and hold the first election; the voters numbered between forty and fifty.
In 1870 Madison County, John Rose 34, and Lucinda 24, have John 13, Francis 10, George 8, James 5, and Charlotta eleven months.
In 1880 Dallas County, Iowa, John is 44, Lucinda 32, with James 14 and Charlotte 10.

John Rose was born March 2, 1836, dying Oct 11, 1919, and Lucinda Angeline Hopper Sept 14, 1846, dying Nov 14, 1922, married December 1, 1864. John's father was Willis Rose 1800-1861, and his mother was Charlotte Loven 1805-1885, married 1827.

In 1900 Kit Carson County, John Rose is on the same page as George, born March 1836 Illinois, with Lucinda A. Sept 1846 North Carolina, and Harry D. Dec 1884 Iowa.
John 74 and Lucinda 63 are alone in 1910 Kit Carson County. on the same page as George and Susan.

Lucinda is widowed in 1920 Burlington, Colorado.
