James claimed a quarter in section 29, 8S 45W, Kit Carson County, in 1891.

He might be the James Wesley Smith, born 1853 in Clermont County, Ohio, buried July 1934 in Lafayette, Colorado # 22196516.
July 12, 1934 "Joseph Smith, 81, died at his home in Lafayette on July 3. He had been a resident of Colorado for thirty years, and lived for some time on a farm near Lafayette. He leaves a wife and three sons. Funeral services were held at Saint Ida's Church in Lafayette Friday morning, with Father Robert officiating. Burial was in the Lafayette cemetery."
(The obituary left out daughter Mabel, so it's not surprising that they confused James with his son Joseph.)

February 3, 1982 "Joseph Edward Smith of 408 E. Geneseo St., Lafayette, died Jan. 30 at V.A. Hospital in Denver. He was 88 years of age. Mr. Smith was born March 31, 1893, in Deepwater, Missouri, the son of James Wesley and Anna Martin Smith. He married Edith Poppe on March 10, 1920, in Boulder. He came to Boulder County in 1907 and worked as a coal miner for many years. He was a veteran of U.S. Army in World War I and of U.S. Marines in World War II, and was a member of Lafayette VFW Post 1771. His last employment was with Boulder Valley School District RE-2. Survivors include his wife; a son. Harold Smith, of Quartzhill. Calif.; three daughters. Marguerite Toney of Lafayette. Dorothy Richards of Albuquerque. N. Mex.. and Virginia Vogl of Northglenn; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Seven brothers and sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services were Wednesday. Feb. 3, at 11:00 a.m. at the Henning-Howc Chapel in Lafayette. Officiating was the Chaplain of Lafayette VFW. Burial was in Lafayette Cemetery with Military Rites by VFW Post 1771. "


Mabel T. Smith 1900-1955 is buried in Lafayette # 89569016.
