Harvey N. and Julia A. (Peterson) Jenson, 8 South 45 West
Lars Peterson, one of the pioneers, of Union county, passed away Saturday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Johnson, south of Big Springs, following an illness of several weeks. Mr. Peterson slipped and fell on the ice during the winter and injured his hip and he was confined to his bed since that time. He was tenderly cared for by his daughter, who is a trained nurse, but he grew weaker gradually and the end was not unexpected. Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Johnson at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and at the Baptist church at Big Springs at 2 o'clock with his son-in-law, Rev. E.R. Potter of Chicago, and Rev. B.L. Carlton of the Big Springs Baptist church, in charge. The church was filled with old .neighbors and friends who had come to pay their last respects to the aged man. Interment was made in the Big Springs cemetery. Lars Peterson was born in Nas West Dalarne, Sweden, Aug. 18, 1838 and passed away April 28, 1928, so had attained the advanced age of 80 years, 8 months and 10 days. He came to America in 1867 when he was 29 years old and for the first three years he lived at Onawa where he was united in marriage with Miss Bertha Erickson Sept. 2, 1870. He came to Union county in the early seventies, settling on a homestead five miles west of Hawarden and this place has been his home continually since then. Since the death of his wife 27 years ago he has lived with his children but the old homestead was always regarded as his home. When he came to Union county he united with the Baptist church at Big Springs and for many years he was a faithful member of this church but later he united with the Seventh Day Adventist church and served as a local leader of this organization. Mr. Peterson was a man of keen intellect and was well read and he gained much knowledge through his extensive travels. He practiced his religion in his everyday life and his Bible was his daily companion. He was a great lover of children and one of his last requests was that he might, see his little granddaughter, Bernadine Peterson. He was a kind and loving father and will be greatly missed in the family circles of his children. He is survived by one son, John. L. Peterson of Hawarden and four daughters, Mrs. Mary Neubauer of Wagner, S.D.; Mrs. Hannah Potter of Chicago; Mrs. Ida Johnson of Big Springs; and Mrs. Julia Jenson of Tioga, N.D. He also leaves 17 grandchildren to mourn his death. His twin sister, Mrs. Christine Ericson, passed away two years ago. All the children, with the exception of Mrs. Jenson, were present at the funeral. Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Peterson of Boone, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ole Nelson of Canton and D.O. Anderson of Viborg, S.D. |
