PAUL'S FAMILY

Maria Anne Bromley was born May 12, 1831 in Roade, Northamptonshire to Samuel and Jemima Bromley.

Charles Godsman, 28, son of James Godsman, married Maria Annie Bromley 23, daughter of Samuel Bromley on December 24, 1854 in Bonsall, Derby, England.
Paul Bromley Godsman was born in the April-June 1860 quarter in Throne District, Yorkshire.

His father might be the Charles Godsman age 34, dying November 27, 1860 in either Crowle, Lincolnshire, or Thorne, Yorkshire.

He might be the one in 1861 Bolton, Lancastershire, age 1, born there, with Mana A. Godsman 29 born in Southampton. She's the sister-in-law of William Hollett born in Lancstershire or his wife Jemima A. Hollett 31 born in the West Indies.

C. James Godsman is in Matlock, Derbyshire in 1861, born in Lincolnshire, living with Harriett Mary Bromley, 27, born in Wandsworth, London.

On the Erin, arriving in New York November 9, 1868 from Liverpool, are Maria A. "Goodman" 35 and Paul, 8.

In 1870 Mitchell County, Kansas, M. Godsman is widowed, born in England, 34, with sons J. J. 14 and B. 10, ball born in England.

The 1875 Montgomery County, Kansas census has S.W. Allen, a clergyman 45 born in New Hampshire, M.A. Allen 42 a cook , C. J. Godsman 20 and P.D. Godsman 15, both farfmers, all three born in England.

PAUL'S BROTHER CHARLES

Charles was born in Thorne, Yorkshire, England between October and December 1855.

"Martha Jane Caldwell, born October 9, 1856 ; married Rev. Charles James Godsman, for ten years a missionary of the Presbyterian church, now located at Seattle, Washington."

Charles J. Godsman and Jennie M. Caldwell married in Oneida County, Idaho on October 16, 1886,.

In 1900 Skagit County, Washington, Chas. J. Godsman is a minister, born Oct 1855 in England, immigrating in 1867. He's married to Martha Oct 1854 Pennsylvania, with Ada C. May 1892 and Chas Jr. July 1897, both born in Idaho.

September 15, 1909 Indiana, Pennsylvania, Democrat "Dr. William Caldwell of Johnstown who was well known to many of our older citizens died Monday at 11 oclock of gastritis and complications in his 83rd year. Dr. Caldwell was one of tho pioneer figures of that city and prominent in the local civic and mercantile life of the community for over a generation before the Flood He was born in Indiana county and after receiving a good education edited the Blairsville Appalachian for two years learning the printer's trade in that office. He later studied medicine at Cresson one of the preceptors being Dr. Jackson, known as the founder of Cresson.
Graduating at Jefferson Medical College he practiced in New Florence and Blairsville before moving to Johnstown in 1854. Here he engaged in the mercantile business for a number of years.
When the slavery issue became acute Dr Caldwell took an active part in the formation of the Republican party in the county. He presided at the first Republican meeting held there which elected the late General Jacob M. Campbell delegate to the initial national convention of the party held at Philadelphia in 1856 and which nominated the Pathfinder for President.
Dr. Caldwell served for 25 years in the Old Borough Council and was one of the most faithful and dependable public servants in the history of that community for 50 years.
Dr. Caldwell's wife who was Miss Susan Levergood died in Johnstown 10 years ago. He is survived by these children: Martha Jane wife of Rev. Charles Godsman of Seattle; Lucy wife of W. E. White at whose home he died; Jacob L. Caldwell of Wilkinsburg; Dr. Bertha T. Caldwell who won fame as a Presbyterian missionary in India and at home enjoys the distinction of being the first woman ever elected a School Controller in the city; Agnes Belle wife of J. Frank Dunleavy of Boston. Mrs. Eliza Caldwell Dunlap of Punxsutawney is a sister.
The deceased was prominent in Masonic circles and in the First Presbyterian church. The funeral will take place Wednesday afternoon."

1914 Santa Cruz "Roy R. Learned, a native of North Dakota, aged twenty-two, and Adah C. Godsman, a native of Idaho, also twenty-two, and both of Santa Cruz, were given a marriage license Saturday. "

Martha (Caldwell) Godsman 1856-1917, dying in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, is buried there # 103069234.
"Mrs. Martha Jane Caldwell Godsman, wife of the Rev. Charles J. Godsman, whose death occurred yesterday morning, December 27, 1917, at the Godsman home in San Jose, Cal., was born at the corner of Main and Bedford streets, Fourth Ward, this city, in October, 1857, and was a daughter of the late Dr. William Caldwell and Mrs. Susan Levergood Caldwell. She was a sister of Mrs. William E. White and Dr. Bertha T. Caldwell, of this city; Mrs. J. Frank Dunleavy, of Massachusetts, and Jacob Levergood Caldwell, of Pittsburg. The deceased was educated in the Johnstown schools, having received her diploma some 40 years ago when the high school building was located in what is now the passenger depot of the B. & O.R.R. Company. For several years after her receiving her diploma Miss Caldwell taught school in the old Market street building. She went to Malad, Idaho, to teach in the schools there. During her residence there she met the Rev. Charles J. Godsman, a native of England, who was then working in Idaho as a missionary among the Mormons. They were married in Malad about 1885 and removed a short time later to California, where the Rev. Godsman has since served a number of Presbyterian charges. Besides her husband, brother and sister, Mrs. Godsman is survived by a daughter, Adah, wife of Roy Learned, of Salt Lake City, Utah, who is at present in the Godsman home; a son, Charles J. Godsman, jr., who is serving in the United States Medical Corps at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, and a grandson. Mrs. Learned left Salt Lake City recently for San Jose to spend the Christmas holidays with her parents. Her mother's death was due to pneumonia. Mrs. Godsman had been ill three days. The deceased joined the First Presbyterian Church here during the pastorate of the Rev. William A. Fleming, who was the fourth minister to serve the local charge."

In 1930 Santa Cruz, California, Charles J. is 74, now married to Della 69 born in Illinois, with her sone Clarence Martine 30 born in Illinois.

Charles 84 and Martinie 70 Godsman, with Joseph Martinie 50, are in Santa Cruz for the 1940 census.

Della (Martinie) Godsman 1861-1941 is buried in Soquel California # 138221595.

Charles James Godsman, born Oct 18, 1855, mother Bromley, died January 19, 1947 in Sacramento County.
Their daughter Adah G. Learned 1892-1947 is buried in Sacramento # 178508734.

"Hanford resident Patricia Verlin Schumacher, 79, passed away December 3, 2001 in Hanford, California. Mrs. Schumacher was born Patricia Learned, the daughter of Roy and Adah (Godsman) Learned in Los Molinos, California. She graduated from McClatchy High School in Sacramento. Patricia then attended San Jose State University for Home Economics, where she made her wedding dress. In the spring of 1941, she went on a blind date where Patricia met Gerald Schumacher. They were married on July 4, 1942. Gerald, like most men at that time, joined the military. When he returned from World War II they settled in Hanford. "

PAUL AND MOTHER

When Paul applied for a passport in 1916 to travel to Colombia, South America on mining buisness, he ssaid he was born in Lincolnshire on March 31, 1860, leaving Liverpool in the fall of 1868, naturalized in the probate court of Bureau County, Illinois on April 5, 1886.

Witnesses were M. Stanton and James B. Murray.

In 1880 Montgomery County, Kansas, Paul B. listed as a son of Sidney Allen 51, a minister born in New Hampshire and Maria A. 48 born in England.

Sidney Allen is a Presbyterian minister in Flagler in 1898.

Sidney Allen is a minister in 1900 Burlington, born January 1822 in New Hampshire, married 30 years to Mria A. May 1831 England.

Sidney Allen 1823-1909 and Maria A. Allen 1831-1914 are buried in Burlington.

CHARLOTTE'S FAMILY

Charlotte Josephine Rose was born July 10, 1869 to John Rose 1836-1919 and Lucinada Angeline Hopper 1846-1922.
Charlotte Josephine Rose was eleven months old, born in Iowa, with John Willis Rose in Jackson, Madison Co., Iowa, in 1870.

John Rose 1836-1919 and Lucinda A. Rose 1846-1922 are buried in Burlington.

PAUL AND CHARLOTTE

Paul B. Godsman and Lottie Rose married in Kit Carson County on September 4, 1889.

1894 Hugo, Colorado

1896 Hugo Colorado "Dr. P. B. Godsman, County attorney of Kit Carson county, and residing at Flagler, was a visitor in Hugo for two days."

August 1897 Hugo "The eighth annual institute of the Sixth Normal District adjourned Friday after being in session here since July 26. The very best talent obtainable was in charge, notably Prof. W. E. Knapp of Denver as instructor; Miss Van Hoesen of the Chicago Normal, one of the highest salaried teachers in the United States, and Mrs. Charlotte Godsman of Flagler, each acting for one week as assistant instructor."

In 1900 Burlington, Paul is a physician, born March 1860 in England, immigrating in 1868, married ten years to Charlotte July 1869 Iowa. Sidney P. was born Sept 1890 in Colorado.

Paul claimed a quarter in section 35, 8S 45W, Kit Carson County, in 1907.

In 1909 P.B. Godsman was an attorney, pallbearer for the funeral of A.W. Winegar.

May 1910 "Attorneys Louie Vogt and P. B. Godsman, of Burlington, were in town Friday. - Stratton Press "

Paul is in the Denver 1910 census, a lawyer, 53, Charlotte 40 born in Iowa a teacher, and Sidney 19. His mother Marie A. Allen , widowed, is with them. Marie has had six children two living.

September 1911 "John R. Ruberson is painting the P. B. Godsman residence, opposite the park."

In 1911 P.B. Godsman made application to lease the "school section" 36 in 8S 45W.

June 1912 "Attorney P. B. Godsman has moved his family into the residence recently purchased from Dr. C. W. Merrill. Mrs. Godsman has been connected with the Denver schools for a number of years and Burlington people welcome this estimable family's return."

July 1912 "A large number of friends of Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Godsman gathered at their home Wednesday evening to welcome their return to Burlington. Punch was served by Mrs. Godsman and a general good time was had by all present."

1922 " Election of one member of the Colorado House of Repsesentatives, to represent the Counties of Lincoln, Kit Carson and Cheyenne to succeed Hon. Paul B. Godsman."

1922 " Paul B. Godsman of Burlington, prominently mentioned as a candidate for the governorship, announced his withdrawal from the race before nominatlona were made, leaving the field to Griffith and Cooley."

Paul Bromley Godsman 1860-1926 is buried in Burlington # 89181998, with Charlotte Josephine (Rose) Godsman 1869-1954.

In 1930 Denver Charlotte is widowed, principal at a public school, born in Iowa.
With her are Sidney Paul and June M. Godsman, Charlotte Helen and John Paul along with one roomer and four boarders"

Godsman Elementary School is at 2120 W. Arkansas Avenue in Denver.


In 1940 Denver, Sidney is a lawyer, 48, with June Ann 50 born in Kansas. Charlotte 22 was born in Kansas, John 20 and Mitchell 17 i and June Adrianne 14 born in Colorado. Charlotte is 70, widowed.

Charlotte died on 10 February 1954 in Denver.

Sidney Paul Godsman 1890-1984 is also buried in Burlington # 89182020, with June (Mitchell) Godsman 1889-1987 # 89181970
"June Mitchell is the daughter of John and Cormelia Ann (Nellie) Mitchell."
