Melzar F. and Octavia Winslow, daughter Sarah M. (Winslow) Hill, 8 South 43 West



In 1860 Franklin County, Maine, Elias H. Winslow is 34, Sally 32, Melissa B. 12, "Melger" 9, Esther B. 7, Ellen J. 5, Ida Olive 3, and Mary A. 1.

Melzar F. Winslow proved up 160 acres in sections 27 and 34, 1N 22W, Furnas County, Nebraska in 1885.

Melzar, after his marriage to Mary Octavia Picraux, settled on his father's farm near Springs Creek in the Richmond precinct of Furnas Co., Nebraska. Denise Foley states "It was passed down that Melzar had later purchased the farm for $160. All of their children were born there." The family moved to the Burlington area of Kit Carson Co., Colorado shortly after June 18, 1900. An application in the name of their daughter, Sarah M. Winslow (copy in possession of Denise Foley) was filed a t the Hugo, Colorado Land office for a homestead grant of 160 acres. Melzar and Mary Octavia built a house, barn and other buildings, and began cultivation and stock raising. The grant was finalized on January 17, 1912, according to the BLM Records reviewed by Denise Foley.

One tree said Melzar died in Kit Carson County, and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Beaver City.

Melzar F. Winslow, 35, born in Maine to Elias Winslow and Sarah Folsom, and Octavia M. Piceraux, 26, born in Belgium to Joseph Picinaux and Mary A. Neofleir, on April 9, 1887 in Furnas County.

In 1900 Furnas County, Nebraska, Melzer Winslow is farming, born November 1857 in Maine, with Octavia M. February 1861 in Belgium. She's had six kids, five living. Sarah June 1887, Leah APril 1891, Grant Nov 1892, Walter Dec 1894, and Fremont May 1898.

March 1910 "J. J. Pieraux of Almena, Kansas, is here and will spend the summer with his daughter, Mrs. M. F. Winslow."

In 1910 Kit Carson County, Melzar is 58, born in Maine, with Mary 47 born in Belgium, married 23 years.
Leah is 20, M. Grant 17, Walter W. 15, and Clarence F. 11, all four born in Nebraska.
Sarah is the next household, 20.

In 1911 Malzar F. Winslow was a witness for the land claim of Henry E. Burlingham in 2, 9S 43W.
February 1911 "M. F. Winslow returned the first of this week from a month's visit with relatives and friends in Kansas."

September 1912 "Mr. James Picraux from Victoria is here visiting his uncle Melzer Winslow and family."

Per one tree, in 1880 Worcester County, Massachusetts, Joseph "Pacraux" is 50, Mary A. 47, John G. T. 18, and Mary O. 19.

In 1900 Furnas County, Nebraska, Joseph Pieraux is farming, born April 1825 in Belgium, married 50 years to Mary April 1830 Belgium. Dennis Noirflaise born March 1870 in Belgium is a boarder.

Marie Ann Joseph (Noirfalise) Pieraux born 1832 in Belgium died October 14, 1908 in Furnas County, Nebarska.
In 1920 Kit Carson County, F. Melzar Winslow is 50, born in Belgium, with son Grant 25 born in Nebraska.

In 1920 Kit Carson County, Mary Winslow is 56, widowed, born in Belgium, with son Grant 27.

In 1930 Kit Carson County, Grant Winslow is 37, Lydia 27, Mabel L. 2, and Donald J. newborn. Widowed mother Octavia M. WInslow 69 is with them, immigrating in 1875.

SARAH

In 1910 Sarah is farming in Kit Carson County, living alone, 20, born in Nebraska, father born in Belgium, mother in Maine.

Sarah claimed a quarter in 26, 8S 43W in 1912.
June 27, 1912 Kit Carson Record "Last Thursday, June 20, at the home of the bride's parents occured the marriage of Miss Sarah Winslow to Mr. Bird Hill, both of this vicinity. The ceremony was performed by Rev. C. A. Yersin, pastor of the Christian church.
The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Winslow, and is one of Burlington's most popular young ladies and is well known in this vicinity. The groom is a man of excellent habits and one of Kit Carson County's young farmers.
The young folks are now on their wedding trip through the east. The many friends of the happy young couple extend congratulations."

In 1930 Dickey County, Bird is 45, Sarah M. 41, Fern I. 16, Wayne E. 14, Glenn M. 12, Vernon J. 11, Olive D. 10, Ivan B. 8, Frances E. 6, Howard J. 5, and Ruby R. 1.

Sarah (Winslow) Hill 1888-1980 is buried in Lebanon, Oregon # 28599655, with Bird Judson Hill 1883-1957 # 28599654.

Ferne Hill, 21, married Gustav Hilscher in Brown County, South Dakota on February 9, 1935.

Ferne Isabelle Hilscher, 92, died in Oregon on March 24, 2005.

Ivan B. Hill 1922-1991 is buried in Clark County, Nevada # 1030087839.

Howard J. Hill 1924-1945 is buried in Lebanon, Oregon # 185585274.

Wayne E. Hill, 33, married Edna V. Cross on October 6, 1948 in Mineral County, Montana.

Glenn Winslow Hill is a laborer in 1940 Dickey County, and died in Linn County, Oregon, age 83 on November 1, 2000, spouse Irene.

He's buried in Sweet Home, Linn County, 1917-2000 # 151114817.

"Irene Hill, 83, Lebanon, a former Klamath Falls resident, died May 20, 2001, in Lebanon.
Mrs. Hill was born May 6, 1918, in Klamath Falls to George and Ivy May (Patterson) Stiles. She was raised in Klamath Falls.
She married her first husband, Arthur Beck, in 1933 in Klamath Falls. They moved to Lebanon in 1945.
After he preceded her in death in 1965, she married her second husband, Glenn Hill, in 1966. He also preceded her in death last year.
Mrs. Hill was a homemaker and member of Waterloo Chapel. She enjoyed animals, sewing, cooking and gardening.
Survivors include her daughter, Claudine Keith of Lebanon; stepsons, Tom and Gary Hill; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and brother, Wilbur Stiles of Klamath Falls.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her son, Dale Beck.

Olive is buried in Dickey County # 135523352
"Olive Irean (Hill) Miller, 95, Ellendale, ND died September 5, 2014 at Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes, ND.
Olive Irean (Hill) Miller was born February 8, 1919 to Bird J. and Sarah (Winslow) Hill on a farm one-half mile west of Forbes, ND. Olive attended various country schools. She worked as a hired girl for different families in the Ellendale, ND area. On December 30, 1940 Olive married the love of her life, Arthur E. Miller of Ellendale. Arthur was the son of John E. and Mary (Weis) Miller. Art and Olive purchased a farm in Kentner Township in 1943, which they operated until they retired. In 1977 they purchased a 20-acre plot one-quarter mile from the original farm where they resided until 1999 when they moved into Ellendale.
Olive remained in her own home until July 30, 2012 when she moved to her new home at Evergreen Place. She resided there until she fell asleep September 5, 2014 at the Oakes Community Hospital surrounded by her children. She loved living at the Evergreen and her new friends felt like family. Olive was the kindest, sweetest lady you could ever meet. She loved everyone. She loved reading her Bible, embroidering, gardening, flowers, word search books and visiting with others. She was a member of the Ellendale Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
She was grateful to have shared her life with her late husband of 59 years, Arthur; three sons: Roy (Virginia) Miller, Donald (Elva) Miller, Delbert Miller; one daughter: Sherry (Ron) Fingarson; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grand children.
She was preceded in death by husband, Art, her parents, brothers: Wayne Hill, Glenn Hill, Vernon Hill, Ivan Hill and sisters: Fern Hilscher and Ruby Ward.

Ivan B. Hill 1922-1991 is buried in Clark County, Nevada # 103087839.

Howard J. Hill 1924-1945 is buried in Lebanon Oregon # 185585274.
