In 1860 Schuyler County, Missouri, Jonathan Stipp is farming, 30, with Mahala 20?, Wm. 9, Alonzo 6, Mary E. 3, and Sarah eleven months.

Jonathan Stipp 1825-1869 is buried in Schuyler County # 89996221.
Mahala (Guthrie) Smith 1835-1920 is buried in Schuyler County # 43979690.

In 1870 Schuyler County, Missouri, Mahala Stipp is farming, 34, born in Indiana. William 19, was born in Indiana, Alonzo 16, Mary E. 13, Sarah J 10, Ulysses 7, Mahala 5, and Frances 1 were born in Missouri.

In 1880 Schuyler County, John Smith is 52, Mahala 43. "Grant" Stipp is 17, Carrie 15, and Frances 11.


ULYSSES

Grant Stipp and Lelia M. Bailey, both of Schuyler County, married in Scotland County, Missouri on July 3, 1884.

Ulysses claimed a quarter in section 21, 8S 43W in 1890.

In 1895 Grant Stipp and H.B. Wolgamott purchased the Hardware business of Connell & Co. of Downing, Missouri.

In 1900 Schuyler County, Ulysses is a hardware dealer, born Oct 1862 in Missouri, married 15 years to Lollie Sept 1863 Iowa.
Alta 15, Alma 13, Edith 12, Harley 11, Mervin 10, Clifford 5, Leda 3 and Kathryn 2 were all born in Missouri.

In 1911 Grant was appointed a postmaste in Downing, Missouri.

Grant Stipp owned a property on the east side of Downing, Schuyler County in 1916.

In 1930 Grant Stipp is a truck farmer in Whiteside County, Illinois, 58, with Lelia 57.

1930 "W. E. Haldeman and children, Harley, Dick and Helen returned to their home in Columbus Ohio, after a Thanksgiving visit with Mrs. Haldeman's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Stipp of north of Sterling. Other guests at the Stipp home were: Mr. and Mrs. Harley Stipp, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Simington and daughter Bertha of East Moline, Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Schroeder, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Haldeman, Betty Jean and Delores Haldeman. Mrs. Katherine Smoot and children, Al?cne and Charles of Sterling."

In 1940 Whiteside County, Illinois, Grant Stipp is 77, Lelia 76.

They're living on Route 3, Sterling, Illinois in 1941.

In 1946 Grant and Lelia are living at 612 W. 13th in Sterling.
Mervin C. is parts manager for Haldeman Moror with Myrtle a cashier at Northern Illinois Finance Corporation, livign at 607 12th Avenue.

July 5, 1951 Sterling, Illinois "Mr. and Mrs. Grant Stipp quietly observed their 67th wedding anniversary Wednesday, July 4, at their home, 612 West Thirteenth street. Present for the occasion were four of their five children. Mrs. W. E. Haldeman, Mrs. G. M. Simington, Mrs. D. B. Garman, and Mervin Stipp. Clifford Stipp of St. Louis, Mo., a son, was not able to be present. There are 38 grandchildren and five great grandchildren in the family. Mr. Stipp, who is 88, is not too well and is confined to his home part of the time. Mrs Stipp is well.

GRANT STIPP DIES AT HOME TUESDAY

Grant Stipp passed away at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday in his home, 612 West Thirteenth Street, Sterling, after an extended illness.
The body rests at the Melvin Funeral home where friends may call after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral rites will be conducted at Melvins at 3 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. James McKelvey of the First Methodist church. The burial will be in Riverside cemetery.
Grant Stipp was born October 7, 1862, in Schuyler County, Missouri, the son of Jonathan and Mahal Stipp. He came to Sterling in 1919 from Downing, Missouri, where he had served as postmaster for 17 years, and prior to that time was in the hardware business. While postmaster, Mr. Stipp established four rural routes out of the Downing post office.
Mr. Stipp and Lelia Bailey were united in marriage July 4, 1884, in Memphis, Missouri. They observed their 67th wedding anniversary last July 5. Besides his widow Mr. Stipp is survived by three daughters and two sons. Mrs. W.E. alderman of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Glen Simington, Mrs. Dan Garman and Mervin Stipp of Sterling, and Clifford Stipp of St. Louis, Mo. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. C. M. Bailey of Sadorus, Ill.
Two daughters and one son preceded Mr. Stipp in death.

FUNERAL RITES FOR GRANT STIPP HELD

Funeral rites for Grant Stipp were conducted by the Rev. James D. McKelvey of the First Methodist church at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Melvin funeral home. Organ music was played by Mrs. J. H. Linn.
The burial was made in Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Ocken, Ray Haldeman, Charles Smoot, Joe Galloway, Lynn Stipp and Ed Johnson. Flowers were taken care of by Mrs. Ray Haldeman, Mrs. Thelma Crowther, Mrs. Joe Galloway, Mrs. Charles Smoot and Mrs. Van Andreas."

MRS. MARY LELIA STIPP, STERING, DIES FRIDAY

Mrs. Mary Lelia Stipp, 90, died Friday evening at her home, 612 W. 13th Street, Sterling following an illness of some duration.
The body was taken to the Allen Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. this evening Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m. Monday with Rev. Robert Chidsfer(?), pastor of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Mrs. Stipp was a member of First Methodist Church of Sterling.
She was born Sept. 8, 1863, in Vernon, Iowa, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bailey.
Surviving are three daughters Mrs. W. E. (Alma) Haldeman, Columbus, O., Mrs. Glen (Edith) Sinington, Moline, and Mrs. Dan (Katherine) Garmen, Sterling; two sons, Mervin Stipp, Sterling and Clifford Stipp, St. Louis, Mo. 16 grandchildren and 10 great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Grant Stipp, two daughters and one son. "


Zeda Stipp, born July 16, 1896 in Missouri, died June 27, 1914 in Centerville, Appanoose County, buried in Downing, Missouri.

Mervin Charles Stipp 1890-1967 dying in Mountain Home, Arkansas is buried in Marshall County Iowa # 119218966.

Alma S. Haldeman is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio, 1875-1969 # 69697363.
February 1961 Louisville, Kentucky "The funeral for Harold E. Haldeman, 49, who died Friday at Mount Carmel Hospital 9:45 a.m. Saturday in Columbus. Ohio, will be at a cemetery there. Haldeman was a native of Louisville before moving to Columbus. He worked here for George Byers Sons, Inc., for 18 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruth Haldeman; his mother, Mrs. Alma Haldeman; a sister Mrs. Helen Reeder, and two brothers. Richard and Harley Haldeman, all of Columbus, and another brother, Raymond Haldeman, Sterling, Illinois.


Willis Lane Smoot, born 1892 in South Dakota, is buried in Clay County, Missouri. i- one tree saying he and Katherine divorced about 1940 in Missouri.

Katherine (Stipp) Smoot, 41 of Sterling, Illinois, married Dan B. Garman in Davenport Iowa on March 30, 1939.
1939 "Miss Aileen and Charles Smoot were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Carman."


Alta Stipp, born February 28, 1885 in Downing, Missouri married Clayton L. Patterson in Lucas County, Iowa on March 24, 1908 and died in Whiteside County December 11, 1936.

ALONZO

In 1870 Schuyler County, Frances Tittsworth is 11, with parents Thomas and Nancy.
Sarah is 16, Joseph 13, Frances 11, Susan 8, John 5 and Robert 2.

In 1880 Schuyler County, Alonzo is 26, Frances 20, with Laura 4.

Alonzo claimed a quarter in section 26, 8S 43W in 1890, less than a mile from Ulysses.

In 1900 Schuyler County, "Lonzo" born March 1854, married 27 years to Francis August 1859, have Oland Sept 1889 and Juanita Aug 1892, all born in Missouri.

In 1910 Schuyler County, Alonzo is a painter, 56, Francis 50, and Juanita 17.

In 1920 Alonzo is a laborer in a railroad shop in Rock Island County, Illinois, 65, with Francis 60

Alonzo 1854-1929 is buried in Schyler County, dying in Kansas City, # 46513602.
Frances 1859-1921 is buried with him # 46513627.

Juanita 1892-1982 is buried in Schuyler County # 70126490.
"Juanita Updyke, daughter of Alonzo and Frances Stipp, was born in Downing on August 27, 1892. She passed away in the Grim-Smith Hospital at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 15 days. She was married to Charles Ray Updyke on January 21, 1914 at LaGrange, Missouri at the home of and by the Rev T. A. Hedges. To this union two sons and one daughter were born.
Mrs. Updkye spent her girlhood days in Downing and was a telephone operator there for a number of years. She became a member of the Downing Christian church in 1905 and was active in church work as long as health permitted. She was a member of the United States Army Mothers Post 4; also a member of the Order of Easter Star Chapter 184.

She loved her family and was happy doing things together with them. Her hope in life was "She hath done what she could."
Surviving relatives are two sons, Charles O. Updyke of Clearwater, Florida and James W. Updyke of Kirksville; three grandchildren and one great-grandhild.
She was preceded in death by her husband on February 21, 1968; one daughter, Betty Jane at the age of eight months in Hobart, Oklahoma and one grandson, James William Updyke on January 20, 1962.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, January 14, at 2, in the chapel of the Foster-Fohn Memorial Home. Rev Kenneth Campell of Memphis will officiate. The organist will be Mrs. Dianthe Cable and Kenneth Campbell will sing, "How Great Thou Art." Burial will be in the Downing Cemetery in Downing.
Casket bearers will be Claude Jacobs, Del Wheeler, Harvey Young, Harry Young, Foster Pulis and Bill Murcock. Casket will be closed at 12:00 noon Thursday, Vistation is in progress.
