"Andrew Baker was the youngest of a family of nine boys and was born December 13, 1844 in Ray county, Mo. In the spring of 1893**, Mr. Baker came up the "Oregon Trail" and took a homestead northwest of Fairbury and has lived in this locality continuously since for a period of nearly 66 years. He was married to Miss Mary Beattie, September 18, 1870, on the place now known as the Old Beattie place about 4 miles southeast of Fairbury on the road to Endicott.
Twenty-seven years ago they moved to Fairbury where they have since made their home, for the past few years living at 807 Vine street. They had no children but raised Grace Holmes who is now Mrs. Julius Treager. Mr. and Mrs. Baker celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary at their home last September 18th.
He is survived by his wife and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. L.A. Brumbaugh who was assisted by Rev. Wm. Park and Rev. A.B. Kirk of Wichita, Kans. Burial was made in the Fairbury cemetery.
When it is recalled that probably the first white settler to locate in the county came here in 1856, it will be seen that Andy Baker, who settled here seven years later was really a pioneer. The first white men in the county is believed to have been Mike Conley and a man by the name of Moncreave who were squaw men, married to Indian squaws and who, it is claimed had grown children here in 1856. It is hardly like however, that they had any permanent settlement anywhere in particular. This leaves Dan Patterson, who came here in 1856, as the first settler and the Bakers began coming in 1863.
Six of the Baker boys settled here, Andy, Dan, William, Joseph, John and Henry, of these Dan was the oldest and Andy the youngest and all have now passed on. Two of them did not marry and left no descendants. Andy had no children, Dan had none but adopted a daughter, Wm. had two daughters, now Mrs. Dan Kavanaugh and Mrs. Virge Campbell, Joseph had several children, Carl, Donald, James, Jefferson, Arch, Edith and Kate.
