William E. Hodgin, 8 South 43 West





William claimed a quarter in section 5, 8S 43W in 1907.

" William E. Hodgin was the son of John ?? and Mary (DeBolt) Hodgin who came from Indiana to Hickory Township in 1855. They farmed three miles south of the Campbell Corner.
William married Laura Brownlee. She was the only child of A. Warren and Mary A. (McNeal) Brownlee.
They had two children, Robert and Helen (Mrs. C.E. Burris)
Besides being in the haberdashery business with his brother, Lester, from 1907 to 1918, W.E. or "Cap" as he was popularly known, was Maitland Postmaster from 1923 to 1935. He was also a member of the famous men's quartet that sang together for thirty years and a member of the W.O.W. band. He and Mrs. Hodgin moved to Maryville, where he managed a Standard Oil Service Station on South Main."

W. Ernest Hodgin and Laura M. Brownlee, both of Maitland, Holt County, married there on June 20, 1911.

In 1920 Holt County, Missouri, W. Ernest Hodgin is farming, 35, with Larua B. 30, and Bob B. 5.

In 1930 Holt County, Missouri, William E. Hodgin is a postmanster, 45, with Laura 40, Bob B. 15 and Helen L. 5, all born in Missouri.
William Ernest "Cap" Hodgin 1884-1963 is buried in Maitland # 132778597.
So is Laura 1889-1976 # 132778642.
Helen Lee Hodgin Burris, age 88, passed away peacefully at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center on Saturday, January 19, 2013. Helen was the daughter of W.E. “Cap” and Laura Brownlee Hodgin.
She grew up in Maitland, MO, graduated with honors from Maitland High School and received a music scholarship to Northwest Missouri State University, graduating with honors in music and English.
On May 27, 1947 she married Edward Claunch Burris from Hamilton, Texas. He was a student at Northwest Missouri. Mrs. Burris was a music teacher at Graham, Hopkins, and Eugene Field in Maryville, MO. After some thirty years, she retired from Cherokee Elementary in the Shawnee Mission School District, where she taught first grade.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Bob Brownlee Hodgin.
She is survived by her husband, Edward, of the home, and son-at-heart, Patrick Whitney, his wife Jennifer, and their children, Ben and Emma. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial contributions can be made to the First Methodist Church in Maitland, MO.
Mrs. Burris's body has been cremated. Inurnment will be in the Maitland Cemetery, at a later date.
