KATIE'S FAMILY

In 1880 Seward County, Nebraska, Edward Sonday is 36, Elizabet 31, Neddy 9, Emil 7, Joseph 4, and Kate 2.

In 1885 Seward County, Nebraska, Edward Sonday is farming, 40, Elizabet 35, both born in France. Weltie si 14, Arniel 11, and Joseph 9. Katie Sonday is 7, all born in Illinois. David 4, Lucy 1 and Louis 1 were born in Nebraska.
Edward Sonday is buried in Seward County, Nebraska, 1844-1886, with # 69330179 saying he died in Decatur County, Kansas.

In 1898 witnesses for a land claim in ShermaCounty Kanss were Eli CALKINS, John P. Homey, and Emil D. SONDAY, all of Brewster, Kansas. So they lived near each other.

The Sonday family is in Sherman County, Kansas in 1900. Elizabeth is widowed, born May 1850 in France, immigrating in1859. Joseph Dec 1874, Katie A. April 1878 were born in Illinois, Louie M. Marc and Lucy M. were born March 1884 in Nebraska.

Elizabeth 1849-1921 is buried in Brewster, Sherman County # 58830087.




April 21, 1921 Brewster, Kansas "Mrs. Elizabeth Zeahr Sonday was born at Lorraine, Franc, May 4, 1841, and died at Brewster, Kansas, April 14, 1921, at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 10 days. At the age of seven she came with her parents to America, where they settled in Woodford County, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Edward Sonday. Sept. 8, 1870. In 1879 they moved to Seward, Nebr., and in 188? they started to move to Kansas. When they arrived at Oberlin, Mr. Sonday died, leaving Mrs. Sonday with seven little children. Mrs. Sonday returned to Nebraska where she stayed until 1893 when she came to Brewster, Kansas and proved up on Mr. Sonday's claim. Here she lived and raised her children. She moved into Brewster two years ago where she has lived since, near her daughter, Mrs. W. G. Strain.
In her early youth she gave her heart to God and united with the Mennonite church. After moving to Brewster she had her membership transferred to the M. E. church here. Mrs. Sonday was one of the early pioneers of Northwest Kansas and in the early days when neighbors were few and needed, she played the part of doctor, nurse and neighbor, whenever the occasion called for it. She loved little children and was grandmother to every one. All of her seven children are living and were present at her death. They are Mrs. Nettle Ayres, of Chappell, Nerb., Emil Sonday and Joseph Sonday of Brewster, Kansas, Katie Calkins of Norton, Kansas, David Sonday of Bushnell, Nebr., Louis Sonday and Mrs. W. G. Strain of Brewster.
Besides her children Mrs. Sonday leaves one aged sister, Barbara Reil of Seward, Nebr., and two brothers, Joseph and Balentine Zeahr of Flanigan, Illinois, also sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Besides the immediate family there are many relatives and friends all of whom extend their most sincere sympathy to the bereaved family at this time of sorrow. Servant of God, well done! Thy glorious warfare's past, The battle's fought, the race won, And thou art crowned at last. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon at two o'clock by Rev. C. E. Nash. The remains were laid to rest in the Brewster cemetery. "

Joseph Sonday is farming in Washington County, Colorado in 1910, 34, with Caroline E. 24and her daughter Dottie D. Cupllop 5 born in Kansas.

Joseph and Caroline are back in Sherman County, Kansas in 1920, with Dolores 15, Roy E. 9 born in Colorado, and Ralph A. 2 in Kansas.

Joseph is buried in Sherman County 1875-1947 # 58830100.
ALFRED'S FAMILY

Alfred E. Calkins was born Sept 14, 1874 in Ashtabula, Ohio to Eli Calkins and Mary Bancroft.

In 1880 Erie County, Pennsylvania, Eli is a farmer and agent, 37, with mary 35, George 10, Lou 7, Earnest 5, and Bertha 3.

Eli is farming in 1900 Thomas County, Kansas, born March 1841 in New York, with Mary July 1847 in Pennsylvania. Alfred is a laborer, bonr Sept 1874 in Ohio. Leon, a grandson of Elia nd Mary was born Nov 1895 in Colorado.

1905 Colby, Kansas "Eli Calkins expects to move from his home place to the Brooks place just south of town. "

September 1906 Goodland, Kansas "A. D. Sonday and George Calkins returned from a pleasure trip to Cripple Creek and Colorado Springs. "
October 1906 Goodland, Kansas "Ernest Calkins of Burlington, Colo., spent a few days with' relatives.
Geo. Calkins and wife spent Sunday with Mrs. E. Sonday.
Joe Sonday started for Nebraska for a visijt with his sister. " "

March 20, 1914 Goodland "Eli Calkins was reminded of his 76th birthday on last Saturday. " "

Eli 1841-1923 is buried in Erie County # 69000221, with Mary Helen (Bancroft) Calkins 1847-1938 # 69000236.

Leon was the son of George Calkins and Kjersti Benson Bengtsson. "Kirsten" was widowed in 1910 Colorado Springs, 35, with Gladys 14 and Lewis 12, both born in Colorado.
George was in Cripple Creek in 1910, a gold miner, and one tree said he died in 1914.
George Wilton Calkins and Lutie Leora McKean had Marguerete Evelyn Calkins on Sept 7, 1908 in Erie County, Pennsylvania.....
George is buried in Denver 1869-1914 # 57045831.

ALFRED AND KATIE

March 1901 Goodland Kansas "Ernest Calkins was sowing wheat agaiu Monday."

One tree said that Alfred Ernest Caklins and Catheryn Ann Sonday married April 13, 1901 at Brewster, Kansas.

August 1901 Goodland ".... Ernest Calkins returned from a visit to Pennsylvania and Ohio this week. where they have been visiting."
In 1910 Kit Carson County, Alfred is farming, 35, born in Ohio, married six years to Kate 31 Illinois. Wayne N., 7, Milton E. 4, and Maurine E. 1 were born in Kansas.


Alfred claimed a tract in section 2, 8S 43W in 1912, and another in section 1 in 1915.
Maurice A. Wallet filed for land in 18, 7S 42W in 1910, witnesses Floyd J. Weeks, Franklin E. White, Alfred E. Calkins, and Fred Wallet.
Alfred was also a witness for Amos Munyon in 1911 for land in 7S 43W.

October 1916 Kanorado, Kansas "The W. and I. Club met Thursday with Mrs. Fred Wallett and her sister, Mrs. Mary Fleming. As most of the members were present the meeting was successful. By-laws were discussed and passed. The ladies being very industrious a large amount of sewing was finished. At dinner the table fairly groaned with goodies, to which all did ample justice. In two weeks the club meets with Mrs. A. E. Calkins. No; we won't tell the joke on Mrs. Calkins."

November 1916 "H. P. Jensen and family spent Sunday with A. E. Calkins and family. In the afternoon both families motored over to Barnett farm to see the large barn which is being erected there. "

In March 1920 Sherman County " Alfred E. Calkins and wife to J. A. Bentiey, ??? of sec. 4-8-42."
This tract would be only five miles from his Kit Carson County claim.


Alfred and Kate are farming in 1920 in Sherman County, Kansas, with Wayne A. 17, Wilton E. 14, Maurine E. 11, Gertrude M. 7, Dorothy 4, and Genevieve L. 2.

In 1925 Norton County, Kansas, Alfred is farming, 50, with Kate 46, Wayne 21 a painter, Wilson 18, Maurine 16, all three born in Kansas. Gertrude 12, Dorothy 9, and Genevieve 7 were born in Colorado, Elenaor 4 in Kansas.

In 1930 Norton County, "Earnest" is 56, Katie A. 52, Gertrude M. 18, Dorothy 15, Genevieve R. 12, and Eleanor N. 9.

In 1940 Canon City, Colorado, Alfred is a road laborer for the WPA, 65, with Catherine A. 62. Genevieve 22 is a waitress, Harry E. Chambers 24 a bartender born in Oklahom, married to Eleanor 19. They have Robert W. eleven months old.
Alfred E. Calkins 1875-1945 # 10168247 is buried in Canon City, Colorado, with Catheryn Ann Calkins 1878-1950 # 10168250.

ELEANOR

In 1940 Canon City, Colorado, Alfred is a road laborer for the WPA, 65, with Catherine A. 62. Genevieve 22 is a waitress, Harry E. Chambers 24 a bartender born in Oklahom, married to Eleanor 19. They have Robert W. eleven months old.
Harry Edwin Chambers, born at Williams, Oklahoma July 17, 1915 to Robert W. Chambers and Rosa L. Darett, died in June 1990.
Robert Wilton Chambers, born May 14, 1939, was living in Cedaredge, Colorado in 2004.

WILTON

W.E. Calkins and Leona Karnopp married in Norton County, Kansas on January 3, 1929.

In 1930 Norton County, Kansas, Wilton is a laborer, 24, with Leona B. 20 both born in Kansas.


In 1940 Pueblo Colorado, Wilton is divorced, a cook, living at the state hospital.

He registered for WWII in Pueblo, born May 26, 1905 at Brewster, Kansas, newxt of kin his father Alfred.

Wilton Eli Calkins 1905-1982 is buried in Pasco, Washington # 12229316.

WAYNE

Wayne Calkins, 21, married Margaret Caillier, 21, daughter of Claud Caillier and Mary Hunie, on August 10, 1926 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Wayne Alfred Calkins 1902-1967 is buried in Pasco, Washington # 12229771.

MARY GERTRUDE

Mary is a waitress in Denver in 1940, 28.
Mary Gertrude Ward 1912-2006 is buried in Canon City, # 102758606, with Thomas H. Ward 1910-1983.


GENEVIEVE

"Genevieve Larue Brower, 93, passed away March 5, 2011, in Cañon City.
Genevieve was born in Burlington on August 28, 1917, to Alfred E. and Cathryn Ann (Sonday) Calkins.
She was united in marriage to Lane E. Brower; he preceded her in death on May 2, 1997.
Genevieve was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cañon City, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years, and still attended Bible study every Tuesday.
She loved animals and was an avid gardener. She always had beautiful geraniums throughout her yard.
Genevieve is survived by her daughter Lynda Brower and Lynda's friend Linda Chaney; two sisters, Elnor Chambers and Dorothy Bird; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. " # 67430666.


MAURINE

In 1930 Norton County, Maurine is 21, married to Elmer A. Fisher 26, wtih Joan E. 4, Norman G. 2, and Neil eight months old.
Maurine E. Fisher 1909-1968 is buried in Canon City, COlorado # 111364905.

"Eilene Juan Severns, daughter of Elmer and Maurine (Calkins) Fisher, was born November 6, 1925, in Norton, Kansas, and passed away at her home in Norton, on January 5, 2015, at the age of 89.
Juan grew up in the Norton community and attended the local schools graduating from the Norton High School. On May 30, 1948, Juan and Wilmer Severns were united in marriage in the Norton Christian Church. Juan was a homemaker and Wilmer was a minister so they made their home in several communities where he served including Logan, Kansas, and Maywood, Nebraska. They retired in 1988, and returned to Norton.
Juan was a member of the Norton Christian Church. She loved God and enjoyed singing and writing poetry in praise to Him. Juan was a good cook who loved her family and truly enjoyed being a homemaker and minister's wife.
Survivors include her husband Wilmer Severns, two brothers, Neil Fisher, Spanaway, Washington; Alan Fisher, Canon City, Colorado; one sister, Jeri Sue Barker, Canon City, Colorado;"
